Two commercials for The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. One for the U.S., one for Japan. Notice female Link in the Japanese one. Yuri with Zelda?

Notice how gar (well, kind of ) the U.S. one is in comparison to the Japanese commercial.

POWERTHIRST is the best commercial ever.

Don't take my word for it.

Just watch it.

It tastes like battery acid, but at least its ad is funny.

Damn, I thought commercials from today were stupid. Some of these 80's ones are just off-the-charts in cheesiness. Weirdly, the ones I've seen from the 70's are actually better.

Check out these ones from the 50's and 60's. I actually like the advertisement style of those decades much better than today. Shows how bizarrely advertisement has evolved from cheesy, straight to the point ads to the 'branding' style of today with no substance and no point other than to make you remember the brand name. Seems like a subject without much room for discussion but there's actually something interesting about the history of TV ads and how they've changed.

^ Nah, that's not even close to the awesome sauce that is Halo 3: ODST's live-action trailer.

The strategy may seem stupid, but it is a proven technique for triggering the use of long-term memory. In the end, the message of an ad doesn't quite matter as much as providing a combination of images and sounds that's so wildly exaggerated and totally bizarre that you'd never forget it. And if you don't forget it, voila, you won't forget the brand name it is associated with either. Hence, a successful ad.

Whether or not you enjoy it, well, that's not really the main point of a commercial, is it?

Meh, that just reminds me of the Grey Warden ad, which then brings me to the even better Sacred Ashes trailer.

Let's face it, we're just biased.

That's funny, I don't remember fighting any darkspawn in Haven or on the mountaintop.

I modded my game to use the Sacred Ashes Leliana and Morrigan faces (MUCH BETTER THAN STOCK) and Morrigan's long-sleeve robe. Awesome-sauce. Leliana's default face is so... not hot.

Now if only frenchmen pours as much energy in their movies as they does in their ads instead of trying to be artsy ALL THE FUCKING TIME.

I don't drive, but it's a damn clever advert airing right now, much as with last Christmas on English TV.

It definitely works I'm not disputing that. I just like honest advertising I guess from an aesthetic point of view.
