well damn...didn't expect things to go that direction.
Never read the manga, but got a chill there at the end.

I'm not sure why people always seem to say its a bad thing when the mood suddenly changes? Its done on purpose, and it does provide a narrative reason.

Poor Sayo and Ieyasu T_T
Especially since in the first half, they had a lot of them 'responding' to Tatsumi's comments about them. It really gave a "they're alive somewhere" feel and you expect them to reunite in the future. I actually thought since they mentioned the 3 races surrounding the capital, that one each ended up finding their way to a different kingdom.

I like that Tatsumi isn't a buddha. He's 'good-hearted' but he doesn't hesitate to strike back at people that wronged him.

I also think its interesting that it had very standard shonen qualities and tropes (like that idol statue blocking the sword hit) but its then layered upon by the rather dark and heavy context behind everything.

good OST
good battle animation
but I think White Fox is not make it on time, especially the OP animation and the last scene of that young lady, making the impact is not strong enough

well can't say they put a lot of budget animation-wise
I was expecting the animation to be at 'Jormungand' or 'Steins;Gate'-level but well...

It make sense though, the sponsors (normally) won't pour huge budget to the unproven property like this one.
Yes, despite its 'online' popularity, Akame only managed to sell less than 20k (tankobon sales) prior to the anime hype and promotions
(last week, the tanko sales were climbing fast to the 50k level though)

pacing is kinda sloppy, I know they wanted to adapt the whole first chapter in one go...
but they certainly could make it more 'connected'...
you can feel that almost every scenes are kinda disconnected from the scene after it

And I personally dislike the turkish/arabic-esque BGM (especially during the night raid attack)...
I don't know, it just doesn't feel right with the setting/story...
It will work for Anime like Magi, but not for this one though...

I don't know about that, but regardless I can't say it works this time.

Hmm mixed opinion after watching the first episode.

I liked the animation, characters, art style and theme. But the in between humour bits did not sit well with me, I'd have much rather they took a darker approach like Tokyo ghoul and went for a more serious tone.

Interesting story and defiantly sparked an interest for me to watch the next episode, I just hope there will be a little less of the humour I between the serious. Otherwise another good anime out for summer!

Anime filled summer here I come! Shame I have to wait for a whole week ;-;

The odd humor is a staple of the manga, give it time and it will grow on you(hopefully). The mix of lighthearted moments and utterly brutal developments is what makes Akame ga Kiru interesting IMO. However, I do think that you almost have to have somewhat morbid tastes (and sense of humor) to properly enjoy AgK, it won't please everybody.

I kinda liked the humor with the dark moments, most anime separate them.

side note: he got over his life long friends deaths fast.

There's a surprising lack of spoilers in the OP. That goes to show White Fox understands the appeal of Akame ga kill. It's all about unpredictability.

I have mixed feelings after watching this. I really don't like the way it throws in the humor, it feels horrible mistimed and really threw the impact off the deaths. Pretty much everything else though, I liked.

I think ill continue to watch this one till episode 3 before dropping or continuing it.

Yeah I felt that way about the manga too when I first started reading it, but without giving anything away, it does get better.

What's that got to do with it? You get a weird kind of mood whiplash from the Mc's friends being tortured to death one second and cliche gags the next.
It's this particular show's brand of humour, not the genre and it's understandably something that stands out if you're new to the series. It probably takes some getting used to, since it's a bit... Odd

Interesting first episode. I certainly didn't expect things to turn so brutal so fast. It's nice that the characters introduced all seem capable, there's no whining and also very little fan-service. It did feel a bit rushed though, which made the transition of Ieyasu dying -> zap to comedy indeed rather jarring.

In itself there's nothing wrong with mood changes. But Ieyasu was barely dead when the series went full comedy mode. If anything, it lowered the impact of his friends deaths.

Does anyone know if this is going to be adapted into 12 or 24 episodes? Also, I don't mind the dark nature of the story, but it seemed really strange with the feel of the rest of the show up until that point...was kind of weird.

In any case, any guesses on if this is more of an episodic type storyline (i.e. - each episode = learn about some rich family and their exploits & assassinate them) or is there some kind of big plot that each episode builds towards? I'd personally prefer the latter.
