None of the characters stood out to me, but the episode was somewhat enjoyable nonetheless so I guess I'll at least watch a couple more episodes.

But he also has enough pride to deny it even when he knows it's obvious.

Of course. Every guy must have pride. Still, at least Hachiman is smart enough to not strongly deny the obvious. After his first denial attempt didn’t work, he just leave it at that. Maybe the LN depicts the scene differently, but that’s what we get in the anime.

They didn't press him about it either. It was quite natural for the issue to be dropped, but to me it felt like Yukino was the one doing the dropping ("So anyway..."). He continued to deny it to the end.

“continued to deny it to the end” seem like too strong a definition when, in actuality, Hachiman only said one line of denial with a less-than-angry tone and then stop right after

. I think you’re making too much fuss over his weak denial.

I personally think Hikki is a 'sweep it under the rug' kinda of guy.

If the girls didn't press on even with his half hearted attempt to deny it, he'll insist in his mind that he actually fooled them (even though its pretty obvious he isn't fooling anybody), just so he can rest easier at night.

Kind of like how he tries to tell the teacher that his thoughts in the essay are actually what the average high schooler thinks, to try and bury the subject. But unlike the girls, the teacher wasn't gonna have any of it.

The main guy's first comment almost reminds me about the guy from Aku no Hana. He's not satisfied with the ordinary life. Then, the story direction changes completely. He's not an normal guy, and he is suffering no friend disaster. I think there will be another anime about not being popular in this season.

The title already implies it's romantic comedy. The opening them sounds like romantic comedy. However, it sounds familiar. It sounds like "Kimi no mama de". Perhaps they have same composers?

He himself can be considered a friend of his friend though... (assuming that friend is not an imaginary one)

IMO Hikki is less about being 'smart' and more about being 'purposely ignorant'. That he knows in his heart of hearts he wasn't fooling anyone, but if the problem can be ignored, he will ignore it. This is especially true if the problem is with himself, since he doesn't want to change any aspect of his being.

Contrast this to Yukinon, who always faces everything head-on, and treats everything as it was a challenge to improve oneself no matter how minor it is.

I think “smart enough to know the truth” and “purposely ignorant” don’t necessarily contradict each other. He has both of those characteristics. He know how the world operates but he's being in denial about a certain aspect of it. That was my point. *shrug* Well, your opinion may differ.

Anyway liked the first episode, it has this laid back but entertaining feel to it, not sure if it will stay that way to the end though...will be watching

the two girls are really likeable, and I thought yukino was beautiful the first scene she came out....and it's Saori Hayami.
BTW is it just me, but doesn't it seem Hayami & miyuki sawashiro too are just all over the place these days...but don't get me wrong it's all good they're pretty good.
