Episode 1:
Great start so far, loved the characters, soundtrack, action, and the way it was introduced. I also really like how the director crafted the comedy so far for the show. It just shows how entertaining it can be. Atsushi is a mysterious character but Daizai is even more mysterious. The premise is pretty interesting and I think the first episode lived up to its promise. And oh I just love the theme songs.

Slightly concerning: They couldn't even fill twenty minutes of content in without the absurd amount of flashbacks and repetitive scenes, and this is only the first episode.
It was pretty obvious that the kid was the tiger as soon as it was mentioned. The orphanage scenes were too over-the-top to have any effect, and the fact that they rehashed that scene so many times was just plain annoying. That aside, while the events of the first episode leave little to be impressed about, it seems like it will be a decent watch (thanks to the characters), so I'll probably stick around. Best scene: "I have no such tastes in men." Dump. |

I liked that. Yeah, the concept may be a bit ridiculous, but it's just the right amount of ridiculous and I thought it was enjoyable.
Yeah, it was a bit heavy on the flashbacks, but this first episode didn't really have enough meat on its bones to fill a whole episode, I guess. Hopefully future episodes will be fleshed out more. |

It was obvious that the kid was the tiger when they first started mentioning it. No real surprise there. They also relied on the Orphanage flashback a lot.
Other than that it was an okay start. Daizai seems interesting and the other characters look like they have potential.

Ep 01
I also thought it was an okay start. There is something about the overall feel of the series that reminds me of how I felt when I first tried to watch Durarara (s1) a fee years ago. One of those things where the impression was that the series was good in and of itself, but was not as much my "cup of tea", somehow. Well, just an initial impression - let's see where the next ep takes us for now.

Well, I must say that I enjoyed this very much. I thought the humor was hilarious and the action was great. I've only read the first episode of the manga, and I felt this was definately an improvement. I already like all the characters and I can't wait to see more.
It was kind of funny how they had the opening, then the preview, then the ending. I don't know if I've ever seen it done quite that way before. I unfortunately know very little Japanese literature, so I only caught one of the names as being familiar (and that was only because of that horrible Ranpo series of a few seasons ago). However, having all the characters being named after famous Japanese writers and then having that reflect on their character in the show is rather cool. I wish I knew more about the writers so I could get all the references. I'm guessing it would be equivalent to having Charles Dickens, Edger Allen Poe, Jules Verne, H.G. Wells, William Shakespeare, Mark Twain, and Mary Shelley all working together as detectives. Nice.

As for being over-the-top... I think that's just the director's style. If you're familiar with Ouran/Star Driver/Captain Earth, you'll know what to expect |

It was alright. Though I just get the feeling that Tiger-boy is going to get annoying at some point. Dude you have no home, no job, why are you acting at all bothered at the idea of having a career?
They did rely on that flashback a lot which is slightly concerning. It was ok though. The action segment was fine, and there is enough oddness to the personalities to this group to potentially make it entertaining. But it might not be good enough. Will wait a couple episodes.

The show started a bit slow and weird. One thing that somewhat annoyed me was the overuse of "arrow" pointing towards something. Well, the sound bothered me the most.
It shows some potential but it's one of those shows I can only really judge after a few episodes. |

Hey, they tune up the comedy! Hopefully they add more stuff like this in, and this show might have a chance to escape from being a dead average series like the original manga.
Oh, that OP and ED is amazing, as well as the VA performance in general. Now, I pray the animation quality does not drop after a few episodes... |

I have to say that I'm surprised they went from the opening to the preview to the ending there. I guess it lets us see both the OP and ED in the first episode quickly. I just don't recall any other anime doing that before.

Good stuff so far. I sometimes can't take such manic efforts, but for some reason it worked for me here. The mythic quality of the weakling being the raving tiger is pretty strong.
Mamo-chan was just great. Young (age 22) Uemura Yuuto somehow made the annoying Atsushi work pretty well. And the cast includes Kamiya Hiroshi, Koyama Rikiya, Seto Asami and the now almost 17-year-old Morohoshi Sumire (her career began at age six in Advent Children) -- all voices I admire.

Yes, I would agree with shmaster - very little Kekkai Sensen in this series in my opinion. (To me it still feels a bit like Durarara for some reason, but that could just be me.)

ep1
Eh, the first episode was alright I suppose. It was way more comedic then I thought it would be but those moments were really hit or miss for me with more misses than hits. I'm also like Irenesharda am not familiar in much of the way of Japanese literature so most of author namesdrops don't mean a whole lot to me. Even then... I have a sneaking suspicion that it's more of gimmick for your bog-standard superpower shounen characters than anything. Aside from that the characters were okay at least the ones we got a proper introduction to.
Well in any case, I'll watch for couples more episodes, if not thing than seeing BONES' production arm in full swing. The first episode quite stylish and pretty well animated. The OP and ED are quite nice too. Hopefully I'll find something stronger to latch in the later weeks and the humor better. Last edited by Iron Maw; 2016-04-07 at 01:02. |
