Okay ladies and gentlemen. I'm rather pleased to announce that a Universal version of MPlayer OSX, with support for SSA/ASS subtitle rendering, is now available - you can grab it here:

MPlayer OSX Universal.

The PowerPC binary is the one compiled by me, the Intel binary comes courtesy of Nonezumi. The application has also had it's dependencies on external libraries (ie, the /opt/local/lib files) removed, in this build the libraries are included in the application bundle - it's self contained. ^^

Feel free to go ahead and download it - remember, you MUST have X11 installed for this binary to work - details on where to find X11 are included in the Readme file on the disk image.

EDIT: Wait a sec, I just installed it, and I'm not getting any OSD popups for subtitle control. :O The "won't play DivX MKVs" bug seems to be fixed though. Is there an option somewhere I need to turn on to get OSD?

Did you turn off the subtitle fonts in the Preferences, and then insert (in additional parameters, under Miscellaneous, "-ass -embeddedfonts -fontconfig"?

Oh, and to turn subs on, you need to hit either the 'b' key or the 'j' key to cycle through them

Holy happy apps, Batman! This was the third version I downloaded today, finally jettisoning VLC. Was just about to try the full compile directions when I decided to read the last page... and there it is! The answer to our prayers.

Phew, must calm down now. One small question/criticism, could the directions for cycling subs on and off be added to the readme file, or better yet tell us how to set the Advanced Parameters so that we don't have to remember to hit "b" every time we open a softsubbed file? That would make my life complete.

No, the problem isn't the subtitles themselves, those work fine (once you get to a point when there are some and if you've hit the right key). It's that there's no on-screen feedback as to which tracks you've selected. It used to be like "sub(0) English" or something up in the corner, so you'd know you'd turned them on. It's not a HUGE deal, but having that feedback would be nice, then you KNOW you did it right.

Try adding this to advanced parameters:

-font 'Bitstream Vera Sans' -osdlevel 1

You can get a list of fontconfig font names with fc-list. MPlayer normally defaults to -osdlevel 1, this is just to make sure.

Alternatively, you might wanna try placing any TrueType font file as subfont.ttf in $HOME/.mplayer.

That aside, I prefer configuring MPlayer via the configuration file $HOME/.mplayer/config. For the above you simply would add this to the file:

font="Bitstream Vera Sans"
osdlevel=1

The myriad of other options for subtitles and OSD are also worth a look:

Try adding -slang eng,en to advanced parameters.

Some people are lazy and don't bother to tag their sub tracks properly, so -sid 0 would probably be safer.

Looks like a problem with fontconfig... a piece of code I have exactly no knowledge of.
BTW, I looked inside ./mplayer/fonts and there's one file, MiinaStd.ttf. Which seems to be what the sub is using for OSD. Would moving some default fontfile into that folder fix this problem, or do I need to rebuild fontconfig somehow?

I would probably check your Advanced Settings again. The font mentioned in that error does not appear in my ~/.mplayer folder either, so I think the most likely cause may well be attempting to use a file which doesn't have embedded fonts, or not defining you'd like to use embedded fonts.

Do all files do that, or just that particular one?

(Personally, I'm just having problems with some MP3 audio-based files. It looks like there may be a glitch with this version of MPlayer, scouting around the newsgroups...)

That error means mplayer could not locate the "fonts.conf" file which is required by fontconfig. It should be located in ./mplayer/etc/fonts by default, or in the system's /local/etc/fonts dir I suppose. I'm not quite sure if andiyar is linking to static fontconfig or shared, and if he packages his own shared binary with it or expects it is already installed (?). He could probably better explain where fonts.conf should be found for his build

Also ./mplayer/fonts is where all the embedded fonts which are extracted are located. So don't put any fonts there and expect them to be used. Only the ./mplayer/font folder is where the weird fonts mplayer uses are located. Otherwise it looks for ./mplayer/mplayer/subfont.ttf as the main OSD/etc font.

The fontconfig library taken from MacPorts that is included with andiyar's MPlayer build looks for this config file: /opt/local/etc/fonts/fonts.conf. An easy way out would be to copy /etc/fonts/fonts.conf. But the better way would be to re-compile fontconfig. I don't know if you can tell MacPorts to use additional configure options when compiling fontconfig. Then it should be enough to configure fontconfig with the parameter --with-confdir=/etc/fonts.

There is no folder named ./mplayer/etc/fonts in my install, the only two inside ~.mplayer are config and fonts. /etc/fonts/fonts.conf does exist, however I can't find a folder named /opt anywhere at all. And I have no clue at all how to compile fontconfig for myself. Heh.
Oh, and it looks like stuff such as the available subtitle tracks can be turned on by using the verbose flag, -v
Update: fc-list needs to be run from X11, not the Terminal. Important fact that. Looks like fontconfig needs help.
Yet another addendum: X11R6 installed. XCode tools not installed. At ~2Gb, XCode isn't going to get installed.

A brief question, mukansa - how do you have subtitle fonts enabled in your MPlayer preferences? In the first tab, do you have a specified font/size/encoding set?

If you do... try setting the default font to 'none', then enter the settings string in advanced parameters (-ass -embeddedfonts -fontconfig), and try opening the file you're using, then hit 'b'. Do subs display now?

I think I might have to recompile with the conf file stored elsewhere.

However, I did try out the build several times after moving the entire /opt/local heirarchy out of the way, so I'm surprised it's causing issues....

The issue sounds weird to me. I've just tried a few random MKV files, both with embedded and non-embedded subs, and no errors are coming up whether I'm using embedded or default subtitles (and I've tried a few different default fonts to check it).

It might be worth chucking your /opt/local/libs online as a zip, and seeing if installing that ameliorates the problem... once we know if he's using embedded/default fonts, anyway ^^

X11 wasn't installed when you tried to play the file? Did it work after installing X11?
