One thing I kind of waiting to see is someone actually doing a battle from this tournament in 15mm gaming. Or just the first friendly match where the tanks are "brightly" colored. So many games have the issues with infantry, artillery, (airplanes), mines, anti-tank guns, and other armored vehicles. This would be just tanks and enclosed tank destroyers, and enclosed self propelled guns.
"The weird sort of sport where if someone tells you that 'you shoot like a woman' you say 'thank you' as you take out their T-34 with a Panzer IV"

I'm not sure if this has already been posted yet, but it seems we've got some figures on the dimensions of some of the ships seen in Girls und Panzer. The Ooarai ship is roughly 7.6 km in length, and it is the smaller of the vessels seen thus far: the ships are massive, far beyond anything that modern engineers would consider wise to design without the help of something like Forerunner technology

Wow, the thing is huge!
Makes me wonder why they commissioned ships that size in the first place. Maybe the GuP universe DOES take place after a world-shattering apocalypse after all, especially with hardware like that being used as schools. I wish we produced old tanks and planes anew, as well. It would be great to see some old classics back in action on the road/in the air. |

Yep, 3.1 miles long. Only things in Star Wars that would be bigger are bigger Super Star Destroyer/Defender-class ships (Executor-class being 19 kilometers/11.8 miles, the Eclipse-class at 17.5 kilometers/10.8 miles, Sovereign-class at 15 kilometers/9.3 miles, Viscount-class Star Defender at 17 kilometers/10.5 miles).
It also makes me wonder how such things are funded to be maintained, not only for itself like its engines, structure, etc, but also for everything that goes on aboard like the schools, neighborhoods, and whatnot, lol. Especially when you consider that the Oarai ship is SMALL compared to some of the others; St. Gloriana's being just under 3 times bigger while Pravda's IS 3 times bigger.

The sheer bulk of the vessels may account for why Ooarai is being closed. It's possible that whoever is running their school board is thinking is that the expenses diverted towards running a vessel may be better spent improving existing ships.

Well, they implied that Ooarai had a very successful Tankery program before something happened which forced them to sell the tanks. Maybe Ooarai was a small but prestigious school that fell out of its high academic standings?

That is quite likely, but their program might have also been cut owing to unforeseen expenses: perhaps it was their prestige that allowed them to remain operational for some time after their sensha-do program was axed?

Spoiler for Ooari in 15mm - just need the StuG:
Spoiler for St Gloria's in perfect formation!:
Spoiler for An upgrade for Ooari?!:
Apologies for the ridiculous image sizes, but it's kinda a pain to find a decent place to upload them... also not sure if this BBS has image down sizing abilities? Hmm... how do people get those *nice* spoiler for images tags going anyhow?

I think it's a much more mundane reason why Ooarai's school district was considered for closure: the decline of yearly enrollment (a very real problem facing many schools in Japan right now). Given how Ooarai's an all-girl school, and it doesn't have a healthy influx of students (see tuition fees), well...

Oh, while I'm here, any body know any good sources of the tank team emblems or the school emblems? I'm going to print up some stickers for my minis! :-)

Can't comment if its related to real-world stuff, but it makes sense to me as a World of Tanks player, which just added the Chinese tech tree.... Which ironically, up until Tier 7 doesn't even feature Chinese tanks. Rather they're modded tanks from everywhere else, and are rather crappy choices overall for their tiers barring the T-34.
As for the comparison to Anzio, the manga lays it quite clear: they have ONE tank that can be considered a real threat - the P40 (and indeed it takes out the M3 Lee very easily). Everything else they have, including the Semoventes, aren't even taken seriously (see Yukari dissing the Carro Veloce squad).
