Watched episode 2:
enjoyed it, some bonding time for party members. I guess Mile trained them enough to be able to defeat a golem. Oh, and funny when she created a nendoroid to say problems to. looking forward to next week

For anime-only viewers this is probably fine. For people who've read the source material, though, it's pretty bad. It kind of feels like the studio is just using the name of the series and some characters who are superficially similar to the leads to create their own series.
If I can mentally disassociate this from the novels, I can kind of enjoy it as its own thing. That's probably the approach I'll be taking.

The way Miles teaching the swordswoman(I forgot her name) is thousand times better than the two other magicians Miles just teaching them how to make Ice Spikes and Boiling Water.
Train like that, and she might not even need a sword anymore. |

On the bright side, they might be an indication that the production team decided to not take the usual tack of cramming 4 books fit into a cour, but either going for using these guys and moving in some of the smaller stuff from Book 2 to pad things out until they can just make the training school the one cour, or using these jokers as a mid-boss and then making a version of the Book 2 end (since no suitable landing places are in Book 3) the cour end.

Tried the manga yesterday, and it was good enough. Might try reading it after the anime finishes.
Tried also the novel, but was badly bored and had to stop after a few minutes. Won't be touching it again..

Sorry to hear that. It gets better after things develop a bit more. Especially well into her school arc through the beginning of her Hunter arc (I'm still disappointed we didn't get to see her first attempt at hunting, where she picked up a baseball-size rock to knock a big bird out of a tree, only for the shockwave to rock the entire forest and when she looks up there's nothing but a stump covered in blood and feathers. When she's at her best, it's like One Punch Loli.

To be fair, I agree the first bit is extremely slow and mundane, and the publishers must agree since both the manga and the anime reorganized things. Book 12 has just come out in Japan, and all that crap about entropy still never got "activated", though the later books do go into the ... ah, might be counted as spoilers, can't say more.
Though i do agree they really should find a way to work Mile's first day as a Hunter in. It'll even fit with the gaggy rendition they clearly are going for with this adaptation. |

I'm not the only one seeing a Team Rocket knock off then. Good to know. Looks like they down geared this for kids with the change of story and scripting. Going for the humor focus and ignore all else in the story, which is a shame.
The books are pretty subtle and spend a lot of time with world building and character development with the uber plot worked in around things. It's just an average story though so expecting more than that is doomed.

At least it is hard to post a spoiler when the show is 90% Anime original.
On another note, I have wondered what her lifespan is going to be. If it is half an elder dragons it will be thousands of years, and there could be animals that live much longer than elder dragons, so she might even outlive elder dragons. |

OK, now I am seriously MAD. They took one of the most awesome parts of the beginning of the series and absolutely destroyed it. The whole thing was supposed to be against the Mithrils for one thing, and it was really great. Take for instance Pauline's fight in the mock battle examination. In the novels and manga, here's what happened:
Spoiler for manga / novel fight description:
And how does this show adapt it? She calmly tells the woman to be silent, runs forward and gets hit with a lightly singing fire attack, and the mage gives up when she heals herself and continues forward with threats to hit her over the head. Just how pathetic could they make it!? I'm sorry, but this is a travesty. I can honestly say I don't remember ANY adaptation doing such an insultingly pathetic rendition of such an awesome fight. Frankly, at this point I'm probably only going to continue watching as a show of support for one of my current favorite book series. Not to mention that Mile's original battle was awesome in its own right. She faces off against an A-rank Hunter who's actually able to keep up with her moves, and manages to break her sword, forcing her to go Star Wars on him with a magic sword of light, wearing him down hard until she realizes that she wanted to lose (there was no nonsense about them having to all win, everyone was to fight the B hunters and be evaluated on their performance), and begging him to play along with the act. No one buys the act, but she still "loses" and then turns things over to a boy she'd trained for the specific purpose of having someone beat the opponent that "beat" her. Honestly, do these people even know HOW to animate action at all? It really feels like they don't have the faintest clue how to show characters actually fighting. I know people claim that animators are just trying to advertise the works they're adapting, but frankly I can't see this even succeeding at that if it's going to do things like this. Don't know why you're surprised. I did mention that it has been done as a kiddy anime. Young kids have limited attention span so they get into the action stuff quickly by skipping the story, add in the Team Rocket elements, and don't feel a need to get all detailed with the action sequences. Them cleaning up the language when so many don't anymore just reinforces that evaluation. I've given up on it actually following the original story and just chalk it up as brain candy to kill time with.
Seriously, given how absolutely p*** poor studios are at adapting LNs anymore I just wish they'd stop. It's as painful to watch the attempts as watching ducks attempt to disco. Compared to anime of 10-20 years ago, the majority of stuff lately is sadly lacking on many fronts. I feel bad for the voice actors that have to get their names and talent associated with a lot of the trash put out as a result.

Seriously even for a kids' anime this is bad. I mean, most kid-oriented anime I've seen, even the ones with Team Rocket-type nonsense, still try to make the action entertaining and intense. Kids would have adored Pauline's fight, even if they slightly toned down her wording but kept her shrieking rage.
And I have to disagree about anime studios being all that consistent in making poor adaptations. Most of the adaptations I've seen have been very enjoyable and stuck fairly well to the content. They might not have all been quite on the same level as the best of the last few decades (but then the stuff you remember from the last few decades are most likely only the absolute best of those times too, forgetting the ones that were pretty good or mediocre), but many have been overall rather good in my opinion. But THIS, this is absolutely absurd. Even if I were to agree that other adaptations were bad, none have been like this. Last edited by BWTraveller; 2019-10-21 at 13:33. Original material readers aside this looks highly amusing. It really looks like this is going to be one of those series where you are better served not reading the novel till the anime is done

Really the saddest thing is that they crushed Pauline's personality. She's not supposed to be sweet and composed under all circumstances. When she's in a fight, she's the one flinging attacks around shouting "DIE!" at the top of her lungs. It's one thing to cut an awesome fight. It's another to cut out half of a character's personality.
