Episode 4:
Ah pretty neat episode. The bonding between the two main characters. I also like Papika more and more each week because of her personality now, she just seems like someone who can make friends with anyone very easily. What a bond. The sleepover on the island is adorable. I also love that ending as well. Friends forever~

With each new episode I'm loving this series more and more. Although this episode was more quiet than the one before, it still had its frenetic moments. Some of the background work was just beautiful.
There was a point in the show where I was reminded of an old Australian film called A Picnic At Hanging Rock. If there was actually an intentional reference there, someone on this production team is operating at god-level! |

Wellp, Cocona's dream is progressing. There must be something there.
Seeing Cocona sad after confronting Yayaka saddens me as well. She thought she knew her. She though they were friends. Staying over in the pipe on the roof? ...WTF, why is there a complete jungle ecosystem on the school's roof?! Including edible(?) plants and freakish foreign giant birds? ...Bathing scene. And Papika sleeps naked. Ok... Damn it, I want one of those flying surfboards. Don't leave your board right next to the water, airheaded child! Also, how can that be a secret deserted island when there's a lighthouse on it? Your real world doesn't make any more sense than the illusion one. At least they're getting along better.

These girls feel a little young for that to work as fanservice for my tastes.
On the other hand, given the common theory that this is a coming of age story, Cocona gaining an understanding of her sexual identity is as important as her gaining an understanding of any other part of her identity, so it may well serve a deeper purpose than mere titillation.

Episode 4
So Cocona and Papika have to live together and do everything together in order to get closer to each other for their transformation and Pure Illusion whatever. The mahou shoujo transformation requires them to be in synchrony emotionally and for that they have to get to know each other better. And for that purpose, Paprika will go to Cocona's school and they'll live together in that tunnel. Quite some nudity here. Papika sleeping naked with Cocona and the latter having no problem sleeping with a naked girl. Also I noticed Papika's apparent aversion towards footwear. Or maybe it isn't just restricted to footwear and is towards all kinds of wearable items. Also, the real world here is almost as weird as Pure Illusion. What kind of things were they eating? And what the hell is Uexhall? Yayaka tells that she's collecting the fragments because her side wants world domination. I swear each time I hear "world domination" I remember how gloriously Reigan dissed that idea. But what does Salt's side want? He said something about merging Pure Illusion with the real world (something like that), but what does that mean? I was expecting more revelations about this fragment thing and Pure Illusion from Yayaka, but she didn't say anything other than her side's intention to dominate the world. But they reveal here that the reason why they could transform was because their feelings were in sync. They can go to Pure Illusion on their own too if they're in sync. Cocona's granny easily letting her go to stay at some friend's house without asking who the friend is or why is she staying there, does seem a bit suspicious. Could even be that Cocona is someone like Papika with unknown origins and having been fed false information all this time. But I think it's more because Cocona's parents are dead and granny wants to let Cocona do whatever and not be too strict with the poor kid. Granny probably only wants Cocona to be happy and nothing else. As opposed to the last episode which almost entirely took place in Pure Illusion, this one takes place in the real world entirely and ends with them going into Pure Illusion while reaffirming that they won't leave the other's side at all. Pretty good episode. Yayaka and the other two have been triggered now and they're gonna move into Pure Illusion now. Another confrontation between the two girls who are supposedly best friends. |

Watched episode 3:
Did not expect an intense fight scene in this episode. Hmm, so the world of Pure Illusion do have some people living in it. Soma mascot looking characters, aggressive human like marauders.. plus these giant powerful shape shifting monsters.. and a group that looks like a cult. Pure illusion is one crazy world. Oh, and Papika + Cocona magical girl transformations is cool, and their costumes look amazing! ^____^ Looking forward to next week. This show is awesome.

A training episode wihtout actual training. not bad. In order get stronger and keep their powerful forms inside Pure Illusion Papika and Cocona have to "sync" with each other, and they already have to chance to test the results in the next episode. Gotta say the last moments were quite hype with the alarms of Yayaka and the twins going off as the girls get swallowed in Illusion again.

Will say I like how both sides of this pair need to learn from the other. It's not just Cocona that could use a bit of Papika, it is the other way around. The strengths and flaws of each girl aren't ignored. Papika's ability to just go and do things can be a positive force. Or it can lead to her kind of dragging Cocona through a forest and leaving her behind...Cocona is organized and book smart. But she can lack confidence and fail to see her strengths.
Cocona may see some of the things she's good at as normal, but that's not normal for Papika. Still really like how their transformations reflect the whole idea of being more like each other. Cocona transforming into an aggressive pink haired fighter and Papika being more long range blue haired girl. Straight forward symbolism, but still nice . I'd be unsettled if I knew more about Papika. She probably lives or lived at Flip Flap's main base but wanted to make a space for her and Cocona. I don't think she'd be thrown out if she went back to that base.

Ok I just watched this up to episode 4 and boy am I regretting putting off until now. This show is so outside the norm that it becomes a joy to watch. So many colours, so much zaniness and yet it still sort of makes sense in the end. I haven't seen something this colourful since Space Patrol Luluco. Really nice to have more of these zany shows.
Also, after watching episode 3 I can see why folks are so enamoured by this show. It's that transformation sequence right? I know folks here are big fans of those I kid, I kid... The episode is truly stand out. It reminded me quite a lot of stuff like Gurren Laggan or some of the later episodes of Excel Saga where the lost in the desert trope was also referenced. Are we sure Studio 3Hz doesn't have some sort of relation to old Gainax or Trigger? They are really channelling the same kind of visual creativity those studios where known for (even if clearly different). Anyone got any info on them? I know they did Dimension W (which also had an interesting look to it even if it far was more conventional) but that's about it. Actually I find the animation in this to have a very old school feel to it. Maybe it's the unusual colours used or the way the animation is constructed... I'm not versed enough to tell why, just that it feels very old school while still having more modern production values. Sign me up for that mistrust myself though after episode 4 I have a feeling that, while she knows more than she lets on, she isn't an antagonist. I have a feeling I can see where this is going: the show will probably go down a darker path near the end but then it'll all be resolved with sunshine and butterflies (mainly from Papika, that endless bundle of joy). I wouldn't mind being surprised on that front though.

Episode 5:
Ah back to the serious stuff now. FLIP FLAPPING! That was beautiful, especially the character relationship bonding again between Cocona and Papika.I thought the episode did quite a nice job at expressing the more thrilling elements of storytelling. From the creepy laughs, horror faces, and darker comedy, it had the horror-ish feel. The creativity of Pure Illusion and the way they did the episode overall imo was quite entertaining. I don't trust Yayaka much though.

...Hold hands you two. For crying out loud, can't you follow the tropes? The instant anyone goes out of sight, they vanish. Hold hands so you won't get separated.
And they end up separated the instant I finished typing that. Where's a facepalm emoticon when you need one? Girls, don't go with the creepy faceless automotons. Are you two forgetting what you're even doing there? Time loop when the clock should strike twelve. The lack of twelve is important in this world. Freakish evil brainwashy school of horrors. Yayaka said they were retrieving fragments long before Cocona was, but they keep showing up wherever she and Papkia go. It makes me wonder if they can't actually go anywhere unless Papika and Cocona go there first.
