Now she's looking around for any girl to contract with.

I've been rewatching the blueray version as it airs on Crunchyroll...quite a satisfying experience. The same week by week pacing (along with a partially new audience), but this time I'm so much more familiar with the characters. We've just passed episode 10, and (for my part, at least) Homura's story was much more emotionally moving than I remembered it.
Haha, Madoka also kindled a bit of an interest in me for mahou shoujo series, and this lead me to marathoning Heartcatch (Precure), picking up Suite (Precure), and now greatly enjoying Smile (Precure) as it airs. There's also been great stuff like Tri4 subbing the voiced episode commentaries, and all of the translated interview/production material on wiki.puella-magi.net and by the evageeks guys. But yeah, certainly this has been a great year for Madoka Magica. I think the most important Madoka moment for me over the past year personally was reading these interviews, not so long after the ending--Specifically the Shinji Miyadai article. I think that article in particular really put in context for me the meaning of Madoka as a work of literature, in the year 2011, and for the anime medium in general. While on the one hand it was also supplemented by the multiple other interviews I'd read of Gen Urobochi which established for me Gen's concept of the "heavenly soul" without whose will/sacrifice a happy ending was not possible, this interview laid it out for me how Madoka Magica was not merely a portrait (of the "heavenly soul" that is Madoka), but a narrative. lol, welp. I guess that's what I had to say on this day, at this moment, about Madoka. |
