I'd have been perfectly fine with it had Medaka also died, but...

Who knows if they're really dead If Iihiko's powers were literal Kumagawa and Zenkichi should still be in a coma, with physical capabilities largely impeded. Besides both Kumagawa and Zenkichi are more popular than Medaka if he really was planning this manga to continue he wouldn't kill them off so easily.
