Hmm, I really need to get around to watching the third movie one day. Still think that Smaug is the best thing out of the other two movies though.

The extended version of the last movie is quite interesting, especially during the battle of the 5 armies. I recommend it. I was not expecting to see what I saw in it

^-- I second that; Peter Jackson always adds some extra juicy stuff in his EVs: not only additional scenes (like what ultimately happened to Thráin II, who had been MIA since the battle of Dimrill Dale) but also a reorganization/fluidification of scenes (like the breaching and sacking of Minas Tirith until the Rohirrim finally arrive, in LotR III: RotK, which is much more streamlined in the EV).

In the third Hobbit movie, however, PJ crammed two entire action sequences: the confrontation between the Elves and Dwarves and the wagon-on-ice battle. Granted, those were indeed not critical to the original, theatrical version and thus made for a shorter movie, but they're impressive to watch and a loss for those who won't buy the EV media.
