Indeed. There were some very powerful words in the announcement.

How many awards in total did they sweep? I seem to read a number of articles regarding the domination of PMMM in this year's award ceremonies/giveaways.

Well, it won 12 of 21 Newtype Anime Awards.

Before that, the show won a Kobe Award

So, with this award, the total comes to 14.

However, the first two awards the show won are new ones, so I'm not sure if that compensates for anything.

NewType Award is new. This year is actually the first of it. But both Kobe Award and Japan Media Arts Festival are more than ten years old and are well-known in the industry. For the latter prize, the winners in this award were mostly movie and most TV animations only won Excellence Prizes (including Evangelion, Lain, Ghost in the Shell etc.). Madoka is the second TV animation which wins the Grand Prize. The first is Tatami Galaxy.

So it's won at the kobe awards, the japan media arts festival and at the Newtype Anime Awards

It's not like Madoka has won everything out there though,it got nominated for a Taisho award (it was mentioned earlier in the thread) but didn't win,it didn't win a seiun award either.
Both are SciFi/Fantasy awards

I expect it to do well at the Tokyo anime awards coming up in march though.

My mistake. I must have misread somewhere, or mixed one thing up with the other.

Still, I can't say I'm fully impressed yet, but that may just be unfamiliarity with said awards.

My... MSMM get an award.. not surprising, it's a good show after all.
I wonder if it were 24 episode long, would it be more popular~

That makes me wonder if there might be a continuation in the future, considering they have orika and kazumi magica. It seems this actually gonna be a long series. (although Madoka Magica is probably the latest timeline)... I wonder~

Man, how I envy you hopping over to Japan like that -- and to see an actual anime-dedicated restaurant! Ultra-cool! Not even New York has such! I hope to comment more on your photo blog when I have the time, but looks awesome. Like the thing stepping up on that stool! For the adventurous they ought stuff a bear trap in Charlotte’s mawl there! (Maybe Charlotte’s name should've been "Jillateen"!)
