'Prometheus' (2012) - Ridley Scott's 'Alien' prequel.

Ridley Scott very, very, very rarely misses, as far as I'm concerned. He's about as close to a sure thing as one can get. I am very excited for this, while a little disappointed it is no longer an Alien prequel.

Considering how many bad, if not awful, films he has made in the past decade, I don't know how you can claim this (I wrote something similar on the first page of this thread). Prometheus is the first film of Scott's I've been excited about since Gladiator was first mentioned.

That being said, the newest trailer gave away too much. Part of the beauty of the 2nd trailer was how much was left out while still tantalizing the audience with the sheer potential of the story (and maybe the characters).

Still, my enthusiasm for the picture has not abated, and I eagerly await the films release.

I agree.

It's a movie set in the same universe, prior to the events of Alien, and follows a similar plot. But it's better to think of it as a new story in the same universe, instead of "these are the events leading up to Alien". You can sort of tell already from the trailers and other promo material that the monsters aren't the same, and the ruins are similar but different as well.

And honestly it's probably for the best. Rather than bringing back a franchise that really needs some rest, it's smarter to use the foundation of that story to tell a new one. I wish more movies based on franchises would employ that kind of thinking instead of trying to milk the IP until the stories become nonsensical (or forced into a reboot for the umpteenth time). Fans get some familiarity and nods to things they like, but both newcomers and fans alike get some fresh material. Seems like a win/win.

I have watched the movie with a friend. If you are expecting a ALIEN movie, you'll be disappointed. However, if you are looking for an expansion of the Alien universe lore, you will be in a feast. This movie explores an aspect of the Alienverse that was left in question for decades, what are Space Jockeys? And what have happened on LV-426? And believe me, Ridley Scott have made sure to respect his audience's intelligence by not spoonfeeding them the answers, and leave us the clues to connect the dots.

I saw this movie last night and i would say that this movie is not worth all the hype that it got.

Most of the characters are quite generic. Because we know pretty much nothing about the main character.
I thought that the human"villains" quite bad. Wayland funded this billion dollars space trip to find a method of not dying based on some old drawings of multiple ancient civilizations of 4 stars found by our main characters. That old man must have been really optimistic.
Vickers had a really bad reason for boarding this trip that took many years. Just to make sure that her father would not succeed, so she can keep her father's heritage o_o
I can't blame David for acting that way, because he was just a robot/cyborg/android whatever programmed to do what he was told, eventhough he apparently had some kind of agenda of himself.
As for the monsters of this movie. I find them pretty underwhelming. We have the white alien monsters that were almost never shown (and i have no idea where there were only 2 of them, 1 that took out the 2 scientists in the cave and the other one being conceived by Shaw)
The actual villain of ths movie was called an "engineer" humanoid creature (possible an ancestor of the human due to their similar dna, who supposed to have created the humans) from another planet, who wanted to wipe out the humans from earth. Nothing is explained about them in this movie.
The characters that i ended up liking the most was the captain of the ship and even he was underdevelopped as a character.
The finale/climax of the movie was unimpressive because it was over very fast and the last fight ended very predictably for me. I have no idea how the engineer knew where Shaw was after his ship was "shot down" by a suicide crash by the ship with the humans in it.

The only things that i liked about this movie was the atmosphere at the beginning (before they entered the cave/ship) and the last scene at the very end. Which showed us the birth of an alien from the "aliens franchise". So apparently this movie is somewhat a prequel to aliens or atleast it telsl us how those aliens were originated from. The 2nd generation of the white alien monster (which seemed to be a biological weapoj created by the "engineers"to wipe out the human race) after taking host in the "engineer"

I thought overall it was an okay movie. I don't know how the ratings are so high on IMDB and rotten tomatoes, most of the written reviews don't seem to match it.

I can't be bothered to write a full review, but this one found on IMDB sums up a lot of my frustrations with the movie:

I'm really sorry, but this a major disappointment.

No, I didn't expect miracles or something close to the original Alien. I've been following Scott for 30 years - and it's clear that he has been on the decline since Gladiator and Black Hawk Down.

I liked a few of his later movies like A Good Year - but most have been rather flat and uninspired.

One thing I've noticed, is that he's gotten increasingly complacent with his own "point of view" in terms of historical facts and how things work in reality. It's like he has a complete disregard for plausible motivations or factual information about how things work.

Case in point - there's a scene in the movie where a certain character has to have an operation performed on her body - and it involves slicing directly through the skin and muscle-tissue of her Abdomen. After the procedure, she's simply "stitched together" by metal clips in like 3 seconds - and with a bit of local anesthetic, she continues to move and jump about with some moaning. Ehm, you CAN'T have any kind of normal movement with your muscle tissue completely severed - and there was absolutely no healing involved. Just one of a series of ridiculous events.

The plot is entirely juvenile and cliché stuff with "profound" questions like who created us. For some reason, the beings who created us also want to kill us - and it seems to involve incredibly elaborate genetic engineering that also happened to kill most of our creators in their remote "lab facility". They're CLEARLY much more powerful than we are - and they could just bomb the hell out of us, or do it in a thousand simpler ways. But no, they seem to want to utilise excessively elaborate and dangerous genetic modification or infestation - that they can't handle at all. At least, that's what I got out of it.

They also like to record recent events with some kind of holographic recorder device that is unable to render clear images, only some cool ghostly images that I bet Scott loved to play with. But they're quite polite in how they let you play recordings of their security procedure - so you can easily access their systems with zero effort.

Characters are completely void of personality and growth. They're REALLY REALLY stupid - and they like to freak out for no apparent reason, and they like to stay calm and playful when there IS a reason - like when encountering an alien species for the first time in history.

Among these people with zero personality - we have some willing to gleefully commit suicide by ramming an alien ship, because they like their captain, and they're required to do so because he "can't fly worth a damn" - despite him being the primary pilot hired by a billionaire to do nothing but fly the ship.

Then we have a religious scientist who concludes that she's found our creators, based on: "It's what I choose to believe".

Then we have people who decide to open the door to their ship with no thought process, despite having just faced complete chaos by extremely hostile alien forces - because one of their crew mates seems to be lying in front of the door. This while other crew mates have just been taken over by some kind of alien infestation.

Then we have the very same religious scientist look at an alien "head" they brought back - and she notices some "strange growth" on said head. She then spends 2 seconds thinking and concludes that this is obviously some kind of "foreign cell stuff" (impressive deduction, I must say) - and she decides (for kicks) to stimulate the cells with some kind of energy - just to see what happens. No research - no caution - no nothing.

Then we have the boyfriend of said religious scientist who decides that the air in a completely alien environment is breathable because his device tells him it is - and he immediately removes his helmet. A classic Hollywood scientist moment.

This movie is FULL of this kind of utterly implausible behavior and random decisions.

It has a couple of "for effect" gore scenes - but Scott manages to include ZERO tension along with them. As a result, they're mildly disgusting - but they have no lasting effect whatsoever.

The "aliens" that are a part of this movie all look like plastic - because of overly smooth and pale skin. They look like Lovecraft creatures without a much-needed paint-job.

Inexplicably, the "alien eggs" are now urns with something completely different from a face-hugger inside them. They're full of some kind of genetic modification "goo" technology.

We have Guy Pearce doing a pretty weak "powermonger" performance in pretty bad old-guy make up.

We have an android, well-acted by Fassbender, who seems to be completely random in his decisions and motivations. I simply didn't get what he was about or why he did what he did. It made no sense in any context - not to me anyway.

The music was overwrought and didn't fit with the mood of the film, and it seemed like one theme being repeated endlessly. A surprise, given Scott's usual flair for good music.

I think Lindelof is a complete and total hack - who only got the job because he was the "yes-man" who could match Scott's ego. This is pretty obvious in interviews - where Lindelof always manages to publicly kiss Scott's behind.

1 Star for Fassbender's performance.

1 Star for the amazingly detailed visuals.

1 Star for how the above combine to form the excellent beginning.

Good film. Not everyone will like it though. Stunning visuals can only go so far and although I felt the thematics of the film were shoved down my throat, I doubt anybody less familiar with film analysis will enjoy it. Especially with the sheer lack of answers to any of the questions posed within the plot. Charlize and Michael Fassbender were da amaze, really carried the film through its more 'drudgey' moments.

So this is a few points that I can gathered from the origins of Human here :-

1. Goo from the vases is a evolution catalyst going by how the worms transfromed and how that punk geologist turned into a super human. That will explain how humans got from apes into their current state. Crew of Space Jockeys were some how infected by it and decimated.

2. Now since the Space Jockeys were suppose to be bio weapon engineers so looking at the evolution catalyst here, human are suppose to a bio weapon for them, thus they view us as a threat and now want to wipe us out but the mission to was delayed due the virus outbreak.

Correct me on my theories if I am wrong here.

The Engineer/Space Jockey at the beginning of the film helped to evolve humanity either against the wishes of the other Engineers, or, more likely, unintentionally when the Engineer killed itself (presumably, the DNA helped to change the early hominid species to homo sapien). Consequently, the main species did not want this to occur (for whatever reason), and either just found out about the activity (via David and Weyland) or were planning to destroy humanity 2000 years previous (when the current Engineer base fell).

Then again, maybe humans were invented for the Engineer's to experiment on (ala our use of chimps and other apes).

If we go by the ancients murals that were excavated on Earth, it will seem that the Engineers were mentoring early human civilizations and thus not hostile towards their creations. But something happened 2000 years prior that changed their mindset, what was it ?

Also, if LV-223 is indeed just a laboratory installation and not the home planet, why didn't the home base sent another crew to clean out the human species all these time. Makes you wonder if the LV-223 Engineers is just an independent branch responsible for seeding the human race. If so, where are the others and what are they doing ?

saw the movie, it was nice but not all that great,it din't live upto my expectations, but the effects were pretty good
it's not like an adventure type or discovery type ,it's a little pshycological with the whole human origins and all and there are always new creatures coming out of two different species through out the movie....
Overall din't like the movie that much, it's just a one time watch

It wouldn't surprise me at all that a species that tried to weaponize shit like Xenomorphs would wipe itself out in a major conflict. I don't actually think they were making those bioweapons just to use against earth. I think they just created humans as an experiment (or possibly, as David postulates, as slaves), but later decided that leaving an uncontrolled planet of saipients uncontrolled was stupid.

Xenomorphs are possibly some of the weaker things that they were developing at this place.

Remember the bearded guy who came back as a zombie? Who needed to be shot dozens of times, run over by a truck, then set on fire before they killed him? Now imagine what would happen if you did that to a musclebound, 8 foot tall Space Jockey.

Overall, more than the stupidity of the characters in a survival situation, I think the movies biggest failing is the *profound* and deep stuff they try to push on us.

Did the movie ONCE actually provide a compelling reason that explained why it was important to figure out why the Space Jockey's created us? Or why there was some profound reason we needed to understand why they wanted to kill us? No. Basically we have a pair of soft headed scientists with daddy issues, flying into space thinking that beings that created humans thousands of years ago can be their surrogate father figures. This is treated as profound and intellectual, rather than emotionally unbalanced behavior that needs to be gotten over, which by the end of the movie, the heroine hasn't. She needs to KNOW why her desired surrogate father wanted to hurt her, rather than acknowledge that these beings are not remotely parental figures, either to her personally, or to humanity as a whole. This nauseating stupidity is celebrated at the end of the movie.
