Interesting episode to say the least. I'm glad they didn't waste it on just being a Zorome episode; it really made me question a lot more things about these so-called adults. So was that adult his mom? I don't think it would be a bad guess. And it's weird that Zorome would all of a sudden stop having these recurring dreams of him supposedly being in the womb and being born. And that adult's male partner smiling was pretty creepy. I wonder what was happening in his mind. Anyone else think the same or differently?

i cannot for the life of me place the VA for the adult woman. she sounds so familiar. edit: Ōhara Sayaka. <3 Alicia
about the ep itself. more world building, and it really seems like they're taking the time to develop all the characters. again, they drop subtle hints about what is going on and lay more questions to be answered. they're doing a good job at keeping people interested in what's going on. are 02's teeth getting bigger? and we get confirmation that Hiro was a previous nines member that flunked out for some reason.

First of all I kinda feel sorry for the kids, they risk their lifes to protect the plantation so the parents can watch virtual porn all the day to gain some happiness. Somehow I kinda belive they have some mechanical parts like cyborgs as they have that outer heart device and like the granny mentioned they dont feel much anything with food taste included.
They treat the kids like pets and not consider them human, so clones for sure since they dont copulate like humans did in the past and there is strong similarity between the granny and zorome. The granny cought that naming pattern instantly so I wouldnt be surprised if Hiro learned about that from her somewhere in the past and use that to name his friends (which would add the "she is one of the observers"). The kids are infected with something (dino aids) or operating the Franxx generates strong radtiation which slowly is killing the kids, so they wont grow to be an adult becouse of the high radiation levels and later on body will start to fail. Granny maybe wanted to tell him that either he will not grow to be an adult or that he is not one of them so he will not be allowed to live in the city. Naomi is mostly dead and not in some hospital as they dont even know how to treat them (pets settings), wont allow kids to enter the city and the same wont treat them especially when they were kicked out of the program so considered non-important. Nana might be infected too as she spends her time close to kids so she might not be allowed to go into the city for longer periods too. Could Nana be a bit jelly of that relantionship between Hiro and 02 |

The longer this series runs the more intriguing the story becomes for me. I am guessing that the more invested 02 becomes in the squad the more angry she becomes over the seeming betrayal of the squad by the adults. In this episode I understood why 02 called the City lifeless. This series no longer seems it will have to opportunity to end well for the kids.
One more thing... I keep wondering how the two immediate commanders of the children don't seem to be affected by what the Adults are doing to the Children. Maybe they are and that will be the plot's trump card. Last edited by SeaDoor; 2018-03-17 at 14:05. Reason: Added one more thing |

Darling in the franxx getting interesting by each episode. They are taking their sweet time to develop the characters and they are doing a good job at it. Indeed we got a small glance into the world this kids are living in and reason perhaps why they can't turn into an adult is maybe a bacteria infection as some assumed before.
And 002.. is that a sign of her transforming into a monster?

one thing i liked that episode was the paralel about "how adults are today in japan" how is a "family".
Currently it's really a big issue, the fact which the married couple in japan, are become "strangers" to each other, due to "overwork" and internet, japaneses ending expending more time at work or net than talking with they family and also even almost what happened with the "husband" now which the "VR" japan is geting a lot of "date games" with virtual reality even a "real marriage system for peoples to marry with virtual characters, and have sex with virtual characters (anime or realisty style). The fact which the town is really almost a "ghost town as 002 told is also another problem, i really love how this anime is full of metas and it's interesting which instead of a "normal battle mecha" the focus of the anime is world buildind and dealing with real life issues specially for youngs.

So the whole city living by smoking weed and inject daily stimulant ? That is so f#$% up
Seems no children born naturally for a long time and all the citizen is basically live forever . And then there is an issue with children was infected with something , may be bacteria from outside world or something worse , also they were trained as child soldier . |

Again, I don't think they're clones. Artificially bred maybe, but I don't think they're clones. In particular since, you know, if that woman has a biological connection to Zorome, then there is a gender mismatch.
And yes, it seems that adults no longer reproduce. And possibly are able to live for a very long time. I'm not sure what sort of infection those guys were talking about. What are these kids the victim of? |

Germanturkey said we got confirmation that Hiro was a former Nines, but actually, the adult was talking to Zero Two when he mentioned he was honored a former Nines member had joined them.
I fully expected their society to be a dystopia, but it turned out to be quite an extreme one. The adults don't interact with anybody, even their "partners", and seek only virtual pleasure. I wish it had been somebody other than Zorome who got to see this side of the city, because frankly, he's too dumb to truly understand the meaning of what he saw. His narration even said he eventually stopped thinking about it. Others would have probably been torn up about this. Well, I guess they wanted to show this to the audience without developing the plot too fast, so in that sense, he was the best choice. I wouldn't be surprised if the manga takes a different approach to save time, like it did with Mitsuru/Hiro. No wonder Zero Two is so jaded. Who would want to risk their lives to protect people who are pretty much half dead? That said, they're not all bad persons. The old lady and the policeman showed compassion toward Zorome. Anyway, this was quite a good exposition episode, which confirmed some theories. The "infection" is obviously Klaxosaur related. I'm guessing that the more they will come into contact with them, the sicker they will get, with Hiro and Zero Two being most likely immune. Zero Two, however, has problems of her own, namely her Klaxosaur DNA taking over after piloting for some time.

This lead to another real life japan problem comparation, is from the low birth rates, currently researches in japan are showing which japanese population currently have grow more in "elders" and middle aged peoples than young adults and childrens, leading to a inbalance in economy and social leading to government get afraid in a future not too far, the amount of young peoples being not enough to take care for the old peoples, which looks like what was showed on this episode.
