Not meaning to revive an age old thread (I'm guessing the old SG thread was lost..boooo), so that this is the only remaining one (according to my search at least...)

But has anyone checked the american site recently?

Besides the amusing dialouge by Saiga, and the bad voice overs for Kurogane (tsujido) and someone else whom I forgot already, it looks like its getting decent treatment. Especially interesting is the DVD listing.
A real treat was the wallpaper section.
Though the "story" section is a bit cheesy, as is their BBBB bit.

I have the first disc here and I have to admit, the missing Girls on Film really sucks, especially since the replacement OP seems very lackadaisical.
But that shouldn't be a reason not to get it.

A question... did Gonzo fix up the cheap out-sourced animation art for the DVD release?

I need to know... The story is good, but the TV art really dropped down an abyss in quality after episode 1.

No it's the same animation as the TV release. The only difference Gonzo made for the DVD release was less censoring "at lease up to episode 6 which is as far as I have watched on DVD". I don't know if funimation licenced the TV or the Director's cut verson but with an age rating of 16+ I don't think it's the director's cut.

It was confirmed as the DVD version.

Ergo Proxy had been going that way, and it was only by ep. 13 where everything went right. Now it's slowly returning to shit once again, so ...

It seems that ugly outsourcing is popular nowadays?

It's not necessarily popular now. If you sift through the annals of anime history, you'll find many many mediocre or lousy series with terrible outsourcing. The most famous one appears to be episode 4 of Lost Universe... aka yashigani. (You can find clips of it online to see how bad it is.)

They... tried to rectify it. A little.

Don't forget Mahou Sensei Negima (although that was corrected because there were a lot of people who complained; whereas I think people just forgot about Speed Grapher.)

This season's yashigani is Musashi Gun-dou. うおっ、まぶしっ!

Though frankly speaking Ergo Proxy's bad animation wasn't as bad as Speed Grapher's. It's a real pity because Speed Grapher, IMO, had the best potential out of almost all the Gonzo shows there are - it really deserved the good production values that things like Gatekeepers and Last Exile received. But no...

This is what really makes me hate Gonzo. Asses. Can't recognize talent (like Masashi Ishihama)when they see it because they suck so much. Grrr.
At least the creators managed to get some good stuff out: re the first episode, episode 22, and the Real OP (which is sooo coool.)

(Source is an ad seen on PennyArcade)

Perhaps not entirely relevant to discussion, but isn't it embarassing when a professional ad has these kinds of grammar mistakes? The rest of the ad is just as embarassing; not that it sports any more mistakes I could glimpse at, but the method they're marketing SpeedGrapher (e.g. "Babes. Blades. Blood. Beauty." as a tagline?) is hilarious, to say the least.

The BBBB was a reference to four different shows. It's cheesy, I agree. But so is Desert Punk, a part of the BBBB, which was even cheesier.

But yeah. I bought the first DVD at Anime Expo earlier today, and what I've seen thus far has left me sorely disappointed. The lack of "Girls on Film" was a pretty major blow, yes, but it's not just that -- as far as I can discern, the difference in quality between FUNimation and Shinsen-Subs is far from noteworthy. Unless there's further incentive to purchase the DVDs (read: unless FUNimation is using the director's cut), I'll be sticking with my fansubs.

Man, I always get a good laugh when people claim that fansubs have higher quality. 8)

Listen, I hate those "support the industry, or else" assholes myself, but don't use this argument just to avoid paying money for something you don't like. Not liking it is enough of an argument in itself. The fansub comparison just sounds hilarious. 8)

This might sound I'm like I'm grasping at straws here, but I didn't say that the fansubs were of higher quality -- I said simply that "the difference in quality... is far from noteworthy." The quality of the DVD is undoubtedly superior to the quality of the fansubs, but the extent of superiority that I observed was... questionable. Given that I'm usually coughing up over $40 per DVD (I'm sixteen years old and jobless; no excuse, perhaps, but it means money can be hard to come by), it's frustrating when the contrast between DVD and fansub is anything less than striking.

Note that this is Gonzo. The quality isn't terribly high to start and they don't fix the quality of shows for DVD release.

Episode 7 of Samurai 7 was terrible on TV and DVD release, both R1 and R2. That and FUNi and Gonzo are apparently attached at the hip now so I doubt FUNi would get anything but the best masters that they have. Which isn't saying a lot.

*cough* lol. Anime has no place in socialism, it is purely a luxury.

"The most important forms of art for us are cinema and circus" (c) Vladimir Lenin, founder of USSR.

This is the exact quote. 8)

Indeed, however, if it's art funded solely by the government, then propaganda is what you get. And I don't exactly give Lenin's words much weight, considering what became of the USSR.

This is, however, a debate for another time and place.

Be that as it may, saying something as ignorant and as silly as the above is simply an invitation for a retort.

Hmm the dialogue interplay on the dub made it worth a go. The Rep however lacked a certain something in it. It was nice to have Saiga really called on his self-absorbed bullshit though.

Nothing will get me to buy Suitengu as misunderstood/fallen angel. Also as the show progressed it got crazy. Apparently the goddess drops did nothing and the researchers from the tanker are taken care of.

This is a cheezy peice of crap. But still its like a car wreck you can't stop looking.
