Japan Post halts all package shipments to America

It seems the American government has requested various East Asian countries to stop sending packages that weigh over 16 ounces, for security reasons. Japan Post is the first country to respond. Read more here:

Making a new thread for this because this is kind of a big deal for anyone who imports anime

If I had ordered any Gundam figures, I'd be raging hardcore right now.

Good grief, nothing like watching paranoia from the sidelines, is there?

I would think it's only a temporary measure though...

I'm sure fans are already planning a Currier network for anime figures and games

I'm guessing that the halt won't last long. It'll cut down on businesses too much.

Hmmmmm, time for a quick note to HLJ and cdjapan to see what they say... sorry, but a "reddit" doesn't exactly constitute "news" or a "press release" to me, there's no cite or reference at all.

OTOH.... this is exactly the sort of dumb-ass bullshit worthless 'security theatre' I've come to expect from the US authorities who apparently can't grasp "security" even if it were rammed up their nether regions. My, how the competency and standards have fallen...

I've ordered only a couple times from Japan directly. The regular waiting time is bad enough.

I don't think so. The amount of business that Japan gets from foreign mailorders is probably not very significant. Shipping of other goods would still be going through. If not, that would be considered an embargo, often interpreted as an act of war..

Think of the children!!!! But anthrax could be in it!! and the list goes on. As we bow to the terrorists and their terrorism they have shown how they have utterly controlled and influenced our lives, although I believe that the profit of the defense industry with the use of terrorism is also a possibility, the gullibility and fear that instills most reactionary Americans has shown how susceptible we are to the demands of terrorists.

Wait... Is this halt on private/domestic goods only? Or is it also on commercial goods.
What I was talking about was licensing companies and such in the States not getting stuff.

It doesn't affect businesses who have accounts. It's only affects people who walk up to the counter with a package weighing >1lbs intended for the states who need to pay postage then.

Dang it, I had a few items coming my way from a friend over there... that's gonna kill me on shipping costs. Now they'll have to be shipped individually (if at all).

Indeed, a word from them would be most helpful.

They really are dumb. All you need is a third party and their efforts would be null.

Not if you order with EMS. God's gift to the impatient.

I still haven't found any "official word" on the subject... but the wording is starting to sound like *individuals* in Japan may have trouble mailing outbound to US.

you could always have it sent somewhere else (like Europe) and then forwarded to the US.
it's a huge hassle and expense though

The official word is the PDF linked. It appears to be a reaction to this new US policy.
