The problem I have with G-Reco is that it took me more than 10 episodes to fully grasp what's going on, at least in terms of the political backdrop (which IMO is the most interesting part of the show). I understand that it's a new setting and they need to do some world building, but the show hasn't been doing too well in terms of getting the audience to understand what's going on. Or maybe I'm just slow. But I haven't had this problem with other shows I've watched. I'm perfectly fine with the odd mobile suit designs and the humour, though. The humour is okay and isn't as bad as say ZZ. I am absolutely loving (most of) the mobile suits. While I do love my standard UC-style MSes, some of the G-Reco suits like the Elf Brook and Mack Knife are really unique and introduce a very new and special style.

I've never seen a series so hyped and with such good pre-orders (it was close to 15k) bomb this hard. G-reco is definitely the biggest disappointment of the year.

No offense, but how could something that's in the top 20 be considered to "bomb" hard? And it's apparently just a weekly rating.

Most japanese sales for games/movies happen on the first week unless its supply constraint or benefits from a resurgence of popularity.

If G-Reco was a brand new IP from an up and coming studio then the numbers would be respectable. But for a gundam and by sunrise the numbers are pretty bad. Not horrible like AGE but not even middle of the pack if does like just about every other anime, where the first volumes sell the most and steadily decrease over time.

How about those Gunpla sales? I'm sure that it's selling well!

If Tomino-san is making G-Reco with DVD sales in mind, I think I'll pass. And by the way, I'm sure that he won't make a sequel for it, just tying the knots between Reconguista in G and Turn A.

I should point out that whether a Gundam show suceeds or bombs is determined not just by the ratings and viewing figures, but by toy sales.

It's pretty telling how people view this show in Japan, it had a high preorder rate yet it ended up having those weak sales, all those preorders cancelled after the show aired....

And given previous experience of Tomino's show in modern era (Turn-A), I also expected G-Reco to not sell that well. Now, I don't know the actual data, but I won't be surprised if this show's doing as bad as Turn-A or even worse.
Anyway, yeah, not surprised one bit. Tomino's shows after MSG are really not for everyone (let alone "DVD/Blu-ray Best-seller"-material). I'd say even Zeta is also quite demanding, narrative-wise. If people want an easy-to-digest Tomino's series, they should just (re)watch MSG. Though I must say, MSG's narrative looks simple nowadays, but it was pretty complex during the day of its release. Yes, even the classic MSG bombed the first time it aired. People picked it up later on and realized what MSG brought with it, a new genre of Real-Robot mecha.

(2011) *2,032 Gundam AGE (機動戦士ガンダムAGE)
I'm not sure what standards you're referring to especially since the only Sunrise property that made a dent in this year's sales was Love Live, Buddy Complex pretty much bombed and Cross Ange sold less than VVV even with an event ticket and also Gundam has never relied on video format for sales.

Are you counting Unicorn and soon the Origin?

Mainline, none children targeted Gundams have been doing pretty well sales wise for the last decade. Sure the toys are what Bandai's after, but you aint going to see no one at bandai/sunrise complain if it does well disk wise.

Regardless, it doesn't matter for the outcome of G-Reco. Production is well underway, Tomino doesn't care about anything but the show and already has everything planned, the series is picking up and the toys are doing fine.

Video/Disks. There isn't a concrete way of finding out how gunpla is doing in general outside of anecdotal accounts or looking at sales rankings in amazon.

TV series. OVA/Movies have different standards and are generally expected to push video sales, outside that there really isn't much of a "standard" for Gundam since there's various factors that deem it successful. While SEED pushed a lot of DVDs it's Gunpla line was a dud and Destiny pretty much bombed in that department outside Strike Freedom.

Build Fighters did well. AGE failure is attributed to Bandai not understanding their target audience and kids being generally uninterested in mecha nowadays. G-Reco was never gonna capture the attention of children since unlike other Gundam anime it aired late night, honestly this felt more like a vanity project than anything they actually tried to pursue revenue which is why it's only 26 episodes and airing alongside TRY. It's not a failure and most people's cries of it being a disappointment has to do with the stalker predicting it would sell over 10k before release.

still again, what is with the OP footage still being a reused slide show that does not match up with upbeat-ness of the songs?, it gets boring really fast,
heck even with the original version of SEED's edited recycled stock footage still makes me want to watch the OP because it matches up well with the songs, also its much better if they used the stylish original sequence back in the day like old times, with AGE being the last that used that style as of recent,
did they just spent the entire budget for an eye catching intro on Build Fighters Try or Tomino does want to do stylish intros anymore?.......

Now that we also know that the show is well ahead of schedule (Tomino's storyboards are completed up till the penultimate episode as of this week), I think my previous speculation is ringing ever more true.

This time it's an Avex song though (May J is an Avex artist).

tell that to his Overman King Gainer intro, DEM DANCE MOVES!!
or the unintentionally hilarious Brain Powered's intro (WARNING: NSFW, if you don't want to end up yelling "this is not hentai!!")

A 1000+ copies improvement over the first week. While it's better than Gundam AGE's 2000+ BD copies sold, it doesn't break even commercially.

On the other hand, anyone got a chart on those Gunpla sales?
