I know this anime gets a lot of shit, but I truly love it. From the over-the-top symbolism to the convoluted plot to the weird characters. It's just so charming and make me sit at the edge of my chair each episode ending.

I just completely reject the notion that, on a critical level, Yuri Kuma Arashi could be described as a bad show. In what way?

Everything Ikuhara directs is usually predicated on a foundation of repetitive ceremony which serves to establish the symbolic framework of the piece and spell out the virtues and vices of whatever surreal universe his parable is taking place in. Without this structure, Ikuhara's style of cultural critique via short-hand visual metaphor becomes impossible. Yes, this was plied on thick in the first few episodes of Yurikuma, but with only 1 cour to work with, Ikuhara had to frontload all that universal architecture. In short, don't blame Ikuhara, blame the production company that only approved 12 episodes. |

Just saw the final episode. It was a satisfying ending. No spoilers just yet, watch it yourself. I'm glad I gave this show a chance and didn't let the first few episodes turn me off. I would of kicked myself for missing it. This was my first Ikuhara show and I see where he gets his positive hype from.

Was Sumika Kumaria all along? Or did Kumaria take on the form of Sumika, because this was the form most meaningful to Kureha?
I actually thought that it would end with Kureha and Ginko shot and killed, but apparently not. Also Chouko survived, and is now building her Orwellian dystopia within the school. Finally was Ikuhara taking pot shots at Japanese social norms throughout the episode? |

Sure YKA would have benefited by having more character specific episodes to maximize our investment in the cast - but what we got was incredibly fun, intelligent, sincere and lovely. What you'd hope from Ikuhara lite.
39, 24 and now 12. Next he'll create a masterstroke 5 minute (I hope not) anime! |

A great ending. The earlier episodes just had too many repeating motifs and scenes that probably turned a lot of people off (especially since nothing made sense). I totally did not expect Kumaria = Sumika, but it does tie Sumika into the overall narrative a lot more. Overall the art, music, and direction were incredibly well done and helped carry the show through the earlier episodes. 8/10.

Well for what i see Sumika is not the real Lady Kumaria. Why Sumika is showed to be Lady kumaria because Kureha depicted it to be like that. Its thanks to Sumika's love that Kureha understands the love for Ginko (during the yuri trial in last episode). So when the Lady Kumaria came down in front Kureha, what process in Kureha's mind the first thing she thought or the first person she see ABOUT THE LADY OF LOVE is of course Sumika.
