Now, soccer is popular and anime is mainstream... But sports anime seem to get no exposure at all. Many aren't even streamed (I don't believe the Tsubasa reboot is, is it?). Kind of a self-perpetuating cycle - "Sports anime isn't popular in America so we won't license it." And it never gets more popular because people never get the chance to see it.

In the early 1990s - long before Pokémon was a thing - both Tsubasa and Ganbare! Kickers ran back to back in the afternoon on TV. And so did Attack No.1 and maybe other sports anime, I don't know. They were fairly popular, but obviously couldn't compare with what Pockets Monsters turned out to become. I blame the lack of a tie in with toys. Sports anime only happen on TV and then that's pretty much it. Even if it got more popular, there are no obvious ways to milk it for money. Also, they are damned to a niche by the label sport. I hate sports and can't stand to watch sports anime. And over the years, I've often heard the opinion repeated, that sounds something like "recommend me anything, except for gay porn and sports anime".
Maybe because anime has a big appeal for nerds and those naturally don't get along well with the kids that are into sports.

Johnny's entertainment on the other hand...it is a running gag that you have to write an essay to access a foreign Johnny's fans livejournal content because JE is that thorough in cracking down on piracy that if a Johnny fan is caught sharing they are banned from the club
