The non-hamburger, but still, hamburger battle was not too exciting, and it did feel like it was rushed. They really should have called it a sandwich battle because those dishes were not hamburgers. Heck, even sandwiches off of the basic principle of hamburgers is fine, too. It is just not hamburgers they were making.
One was a Chinese style steamed bun sandwich, and the other was a gyro pita sandwich. Although they do look delicious, they are not even in the "burger" variety of sandwiches, which can be turkey burger, bison burger, and even veggie burger. Still, I'm glad they are blazing through these tournaments, since they are just food battles that can get repetitious. I hope they get to more story soon. Edit: I've had flounder fish tacos in Baja California, Mexico, so I don't think fish is problem for tacos.

It's definitely not an issue but it's definitely way down what is common taco filling in most of Mexico except for the two Baja California states and some places in western Mexico. Definitely not to the degree that it's popular in the US. Really I was being facetious though, I'm not one for ontological discussions.

I don't have strong feelings/opinions about it but I agree that those things weren't hamburgers.
They looked delicious, yes, but they were not hamburgers. Also, I learned that it's called "achaar" in other countries

The "winning" entry was a gyro in every possible detail. I'm pretty disappointed if Japan can't even tell the difference.
I'd be open to the idea of a turtle burger as long as I didn't have to watch it get slaughtered and bleed out all over my meal. That might affect my appetite. |

I wonder how far they are willing to push the boundary for culinary. Turtle are kinda nothing when compared to dog or cat . Pity it's just one cour, having read the manga, there's definitely enough material to fill out two cour.

Episode 3
So Megumi loses to Ryo. Cool. Megumi still got the audience to applaud for her since she did manage to stand up against the terrifying Ryo. But, they should have shown how that battle effected Megumi. I mean, she's a main character and she should have gotten some time after the battle to show that she's depressed that she lost or that the fight didn't effect her that much and she's now more determined than ever. There should have been at least some focus on her. It felt like she was brushed aside just like that. Then, they should have given us more Ryo and Alice back story. That is important since Ryo is a semifinalist after all and we don't know much about him and his relationship with Alice. The fight between Hisako and Hayama was cool. Hisako made a healthy burger which is good for you and whatever. But Hayama appealed to their stomachs and made something they just can't resist regardless of how healthy or unhealthy it is. He did the complete opposite of Hisako. But the fight felt a bit too short and rushed. They should have given it more time instead of focusing on that fat guy. And I don't really get why they had to hide his identity up until now. They could have shown at least something about him in the previous season especially since he passed the first round and was in Soma's group at that. They could have shown just the judges reactions to his food and then shown him from behind with Soma seeing who this guy is or something along those lines. They could have shown him in some way because right now he kinda feels like he came out of nowhere (even though he's so big). Anyway, Subaru is a creepy guy. The amount of information he has on Soma and Takumi is disturbing. I mean knowing what kind of patterns Takumi's underwear usually has can hardly be called something you should know even if you like doing things in detail. That is one kind of detail no one needs. And this fat guy pisses off Takumi by insulting Isami and by being horribly disgusting – putting chewed gum on anything and then spreading it all over is absolutely gross. And Takumi has this battle turn into a shokugeki. But how was he even allowed to touch Takumi's equipment? There should be a rule that prevents people from touching their opponents equipment. What if Subaru damaged some of Takumi's stuff which then effects his performance? Wouldn't that be cheating? I hate Subaru already for being such an ass. Go nekoing beat him, Aldini! |

They're really going for a fight per episode...this does not bode well :S
This week's match was rather predictable. Hisako remarks that Akira's dish would be heavy, but hers was in fact very chewey, old people can't flap their jaws so much! Neither dish was a burger (it was basically pita kebab vs steamed bun, uh, TURTLE!?) and Akira hit the nail with his note: you gotta have pickles* in this kind of dish! ...and then he went ahead and used onions -_- * pickled cucumber is the only pickle I recognize. The rest are all bastard veggies that want to infiltrate pickle dishes. Subaru is an odd character - not because he's quirky, but because he starts out kind of likeable and then goes full bastard mode, insulting Takumi in as many ways as possible. Next week, shokugeki coming up! Hisako may have lost the match, but she had the best shots...turtle costume |

People pickle stuff all around the world in different ways and have been doing for centuries given that it's one of the easiest ways to preserve food. From pickled plums in japan, to escabeche in Latin america and spain (pickled Jalapenos, pickled carrots, pickled mushrooms) to Achaar in well, pretty much anywhere South East asia.

I know, I've actually tried quite a few, like carrots, cauliflower, cabbage (or sauerkraut, not sure), broccoli and radish. Can't say I enjoyed the experience, but I also know it's just me. I happened to recently try spicy chicken pita with yoghurt sauce and pickled onions (about a week ago), and the only thing I could think of was how much better it would have been if not for the onions (truth be told, it was rather stuffed with them, so maybe it was a quantitative issue).
Even so, pickles truly do heighten the taste of meat in burgers and kebab, but also of any food with a heavy taste, even lentils. |

I don't really see what's the issue. If you like eating meat you have to embrace the fact that we kill animals for a living. If you don't like it go veggie. I mean it wasn't even an issue of making the anime suffer since it was a single, clean cut. No suffering for the turtle.

To add confusion to the burger debate, would stating that it's just a sandwich consisting of seasoned ground meat (that might've been a flattened meatball), some greens, some savory sauce all wedged between some carbs (with the exception of the double down burger) be sufficient enough?
