Episode 4:

I felt bad for Takumi this episode. He basically got mocked by Subaru....

Not that I doubt his skills but what Souma said at the end is right. Hardly anyone can respect a chef like that. Decent episode, I like the food texture and judges (lol that song.) with their reactions. Now Souma is betting his career against Subaru's tools so it'll be a match worth watching hopefully.

Lol, that song was so silly by the judge though, really.

It's kinda bullshit that Subaru has been able to win 99 times this way, you'd think he would become famous for it and the other students would get together and make a strategy against him. But I guess this show isn't that serious and this way we can have Souma demonstrate that strategy, which will be fun to watch.

I'd like to imagine that shokugekis happen all the time and only the 'big' ones happen in front of an audience, when something 'big' is at stake. Plus, I'd imagine that the "pride" Mimasaki was talking about would prevent anyone from saying they lost their favorite/most important tool, let alone why.

Thing about Souma is that he's good at improvising and using unusual strategies even in the most crutch of times(due to skill, plot armor, etc), but it'll be interesting nonetheless to see how both of them plan to 1-up each other. I hope they don't mess around too much in the next episode and at least get to the beginning of their match.

Episode 4

So Subaru wins by making what his opponent makes, except he makes it better. He stalks his opponent and then uses his information to predict what his opponent will make and what possible last moment changes can be made. He then takes all that into account and modifies the original recipe to make it better than anything his opponent can come up with. He does just that and defeats Takumi to take his mezzaluna.

Subaru is a terrible person through and through. Being a hardcore stalker was bad enough and now he's cooking, not to be the best, but to defeat his opponent (he isn't even aiming to win). Even though the end result is good tasting food, it is the mentality which makes the difference. Subaru is highly unprofessional as a chef because of his mentality when he cooks against someone, what he does to defeat his opponent, and his stalking. His mindset is pretty off because obviously you wouldn't be cooking to defeat someone in the kitchen. Everyone else here is aiming to be the best, but Subaru is only aiming to defeat the person in front of him and take their beloved possession. Subaru's a terrible person in every way. Soma has put his career as a chef on the line for his Shokugeki and he will teach that bastard a lesson and blow him away. The way to defeat Subaru is probably to keep every single option open. And the way to do that is to have a lot of extra ingredients with you so that you can improvise at any moment. And this will be even more easy for Soma given his unpredictable unorthodox cooking style. I mean, he used an afternoon snack as a substitute for bread crumbs, who saw that coming? And obviously the stalker would take that into account too and take measures against it. Would be interesting if Subaru can come up with a dish himself rather than just modifying other's recipes.

But I think we'll be getting that monster vs ponytail guy first. Gonna be one hell of a showdown.

I think Aohige had successfully crafted a few last year...but this week's is rather challenging to get just right.

It's not even something you need to imagine, I believe they said as much back in the Don RS Shokugeki. The President was shocked by how big a stage they had since the last time he was in a Shokugeki, the only audience was a couple of wild animals attracted by the smell.

I just spent the past 2 days watching the first season, and now I've caught up. It's been enjoyable and fun ride in all.

Really disliked the last arc of the third season, and this current one (which is an extension). Hopefully they can get through this tournament quickly, I'm not enjoying it at all.

All the girls eliminated right off the bat foolishly. The previous judges were much better than the current ones as well. Now all we have are some old hairy balls orgasmic reactions.

I, too, watched through the first season and caught up today in a matter of days. Surprised at the quality of the show, quite honestly.

In terms of the pacing discussion: I haven't read the manga, but I'm curious how far ahead the manga is to where people anticipate this cour ending. It could be we'll be stick with 1 cour from now on due to needing to let the manga move on ahead enough. That way you don't have filler or huge gaps in order to let the manga get far enough along.

To that end, there are bound to be some cuts and sacrifices made in order to tell the story you want in 13 episodes, and you have to determine what is worth cutting. I can't really say until the season is over, but at the very least I can say the chapter with the kids, while it would have been delightful, was also unnecessary. That stuff worked fine as flashback, though hopefully it will result in room for more character interaction later.

For the most part, I've been fine with the pacing. Unlike most Shonen anime of this formula, this one feels like stuff happens every episode. As someone that doesn't read the manga, I feel like I get enough of the characters and the situations, and I especially don't want too many of these competitions stretched out for more episodes than necessary.

To that end, Subaru's introduction was completely baffling. At the very least, saying "Oh, it's that guy that bumped into me" when such a scene was never animated at all. Leaving the children and Ryouko to flashbacks is certainly fine. Leaving a major antagonist and competitor to flashbacks is not. Or at least, not in the way they presented. It merely confused me. Evidently an OVA was released, and if some of these moments were at least kept to the OVA I'd be a bit more forgiving. Yet instead I was just confused, especially since I had JUST finished watching the prior season.

Subaru is, thus far, the only character I don't really like. He's also the first character that really has me worried this show will see the same kind of character glut you get in a show like Bleach, which is too damn scared to kill characters (and ultimately why I stopped watching). Tension is lost because there's no precedent for anyone being put on the chopping block, and because no one is ever expelled then characters keep coming back and needing to be touched on. This gets incredibly frustrating and ends up slowing down story progression.

Thus far the show manages to avoid stepping into typical shonen-genre traps, but it could easily stumble into those same pits and ultimately become a frustrating and even boring watch. Even now, you know Soma is gonna win because if he stopped being a chef then the show would end. And even if he does lose, there will be plot magic to save him just like it saved Megumi from expulsion.

If the show's not careful, it'll simply become nothing more than comfort food.

Speaking of food, from what I can gather the hamburger argument is silly and overly specific to not only the reality of it, but to how other cultures have modified and evolved it. As was stated, you can have a bison burger, turkey burger, chicken burger, veggie burger, fish, etc. As for specific requirements of pickles and specifically shaped buns, that's just silly. That's like saying a pizza can only be made with tomato sauce and pepperoni.

To which I say screw that, because garlic parmesan and alfredo make delicious pizza sauces.

Also: you've been watching a show where common recipes are always given unconventional and reinvented twists, such as a curry calzone, and NOW you become specific on what a food item can and cannot be?

Episode 5:

That was fun, got what I had expected from the episode with all the buildup and segments regarding Souma's preparation for his upcoming Shokugeki. I also can't help but laugh at the segment when Erina was reading shoujo manga and reactions. Priceless.

Regarding the food battle itself, it looks like Souma's opponent predicted his moves...so it'll be interesting to see who can make the better moves.

Eh, I find that guy who trying to write a story on Souma to be somewhat annoying.

The pacing on this episode was just right for me. I would guess that in the end, mimasaka would be defeated not because he failed to completely grasp how Souma cooks, but because Souma will get inspiration for some other source that Mimasaka doesn't know anything about.

After all, if Mimasaka was as good with his research skills as he was portrayed to be, then he should know about Souma's father

Edit: I forgot to add that they finally revealed who that pink haired girl in the OP was

Episode 5

So Soma has challenged Subaru to a Shokugeki and is even nekoing telling him that he'll be making beef stew. Doesn't really matter since Subaru would have figured it out anyway given the hardcore stalker he is. Lol that journalist kid. Nekoing nosy media. Always trying to get a story out of everything and not giving up until they have the story they want. Lol Soma uses him as his taste tester and he eats everything Soma makes saying it's delicious. And then Erina trashes his latest creation. I had almost forgotten that Erina was the god tongue girl whose taste buds were in high demand. Lol she accepted Soma's request on the condition that he lends her the rest of the shoujo manga she was reading from whoever has it.

And I kinda expected Soma vs Subaru to be the second semi final match considering it is more high profile than Hayama vs Ryo. This is a battle between Soma and Soma. He's trying to predict what he would predict and get a step ahead of himself. But Subaru literally puts himself in his opponent's shoes and even nekoing acts like him god dammit! How nekoing creepy do you want to be before you're satisfied?! But anyway, guess Subaru will be lying in the flower bed in next week's ending sequence.

Well, it looks like someone heard my plea. Much better selection of judges this time around.

Huh? Dunno. If this was real life I'd be pretty underwhelmed if some of the best they could get was last year's alumnus (Sonoka),an alumnus from two years ago (Taki) an employee from another branch (Doujima) and other alumni they ropped in instead of anyone more experienced from the industry. In that sense the preliminaries and quarter finals were doing much better.
