Yamamoto stopping on a race only to come up on top is part of the show. It says that he is a genius and that he is able to do the impossible or the unlikely. It is the first race so they can't show their full potential yet. So yamamoto needs to have an excuse or a way to say that he may not evolve as fast as shinozaki but he already has evolved far enough that all shinozaki will do is catch up to him for the rest or most of the story.
All shows or animes with this genre are impossible IRL. Some hotshot genius dude trains for 3 years non-stop and before anyone knows it, he is the champion of the world or japan. This is definitely unlikely IRL but it makes a great story so we all watch it. My point is, reality check will sometimes not be included just so the story can progress and develop. |

While I swear the timing is coincidental, I finished this series today, same day as the Tour de France concluded. For something that got so little attention I really thought it was quite good. I got a little tired of all the flashbacks during the race, the race lasted too long, and it was a bit anti-climatic how the story just abandoned Shinozaki for three eps so close to the end. But on balance it was a pleasantly off-center sports anime, with rather interesting characters. The potential for a second season is obvious, especially with the manga ongoing, but I don't expect we'll see one.
