Gundam - Favorite Female Characters

Sumeragi Lee Noriega in Gundam 00 would have been a good choice as well but she's somewhat alcholic.

Somewhat?... Wat? Dude, Sumeragi is an alcoholic. She just is good at remaining sober. I may be wrong on this but I'm pretty sure she is an alcoholic.

P.S.: Sumeragi is still awesome regardless.

They're ether the typical damsel in distress types or they have character so bad they're totally unlikeable. The worst offender in the category is the swedish girl in Gundam Fighter Z called "Allen B BEARDsley" and as a swedish speaker (my first language BTW) I almost feel offended by how poorly that character has been named.

So for me it's more of a case of character I dislike the least and in that competition Karen Joshua from 08th MS team is the winner.

AU Gundam treats females like shit by making them all terrible pilots or just bridge bunnies, just how it is.

All the badass females are in UC, Emma, Haman, Four, Reccoa, Marida, Purus, Katejina, Cima, Roux, Sarah or even Rosamia and Quess they fall short next to their piloting skills, and just general respect as pilots within the series.

Emma being the very best example on how to do a strong female lead.

Okay, she's not a pilot, but she does try to follow her family's pacifism beliefs, despite the fact that it was hinted that she was still learning about "Total Pacifism" herself, as well as some hints that she may not buy into her beliefs, when she allowed Heero and Noin to build a defensive unit.

And then in Endless Waltz, she hijacked the signals and encouraged the citizens to stand up to the Mariemaia Army, and after that broadcast, renounced her pacifistic beliefs in front of Mariemaia and Dekim.

That isn't necessarily true. Pala and Ennil especially were both good pilots in After War and both Une and Sally in GW were both above average pilots too.

And I wouldn't call Sarah, Rosamia or Quess "bad-ass" in the least.

Protip: Making a female character 'badass' or really awesome at everything doesn't necessarily make them a good character. They can be that as well, but it's not everything.

To make a strong character that happens to be female, they just need strengths, flaws, more depth than a collection of stereotypes, and to not be second place to the male characters in terms of importance. Not that hard!

Lot's of creators struggle with this, for some stupid reason, it's true. But fans don't help by being really over-critical of every female character ever. It's quite a shame.

AFAIK, the majority of Relena-bashers are yaoi fangirls/fujoshi (esp. the 1x2/2x1 crowd, despite said pairing being non-existent throughout the series).

There are some exceptions of course, Paula and Ennil did barely anything though, Une participated in about one fight with a Leo.

Relena is not even in the running, she had a very contrived and forced importance into the story.

Hey she is better then Cagalli though, a character who started out well, and was completely ruined for trivial reasons.

Pala was a pretty good pilot in her G-Falcon and Ennil single-handedly took out an entire New UNE occupational army in addition to defending the Freeden II on her own in the final battle.

My mistake. I meant to say Noin instead of Une.

Rosamia and Quess were decent pilots; Sarah was no better than Fa in my opinion.

If I can guess what's wrong with Lacus, here's what I can think:

Lacus is an expy of both Relena and Lalah, with the former's pacifistic beliefs and the latter's innocence. But the problem is that she comes off as a bit too perfect, that some fans call her "Virgin Mary Clyne" as a counterpart to Kira's "Jesus Yamato". (On a side note, Athrun is "Judas Zala").

I do like Lacus, but I have difficulty actually finding her particularly interesting. She's just a little too perfect for my taste, and I like my characters to be very flawed. I prefer characters like Fllay, who's easily my favourite character in SEED.

i haven't watched older entries of gundam especially in the UC timeline, only Unicorn now and it's awesome!! mineva has lacus' elegance, relena's determination and cagalli's stubbornness (well i don't really know if mineva also reflects some female personalities in older gundam entries)
