Really interesting to see that there is no manga discussion on this great series.

Just to start the discussion, here is a short summary from the US publisher - Del Rey:

The son of a famous pianist, music student Shinichi Chiaki dreams of studying abroad and becoming a conductor like his mentor. Unfortunately, his fear of flying grounds his lofty plans! As he watches other classmates achieve what he has always wanted, Shinichi wonders if he should quit music altogether.

Then one day he meets fellow student Megumi Noda, also known as Nodame. This oddball girl cannot cook, clean, or even read a music score, but she can play the piano in incomparable Cantabile style. And she teaches Chiaki something that he has forgotten: to enjoy his music, no matter where he is.

I started reading the manga (us-version) after I watched the Live-Action.
And I'm very much in love with it <3 (I think it's much better than the anime), I'm always laughing while reading the manga. The characters are so cool, there's nobody I don't like @_@;
I'm a little nodame-ish sometimes (well, without the talent) so I can relate to her wery easy. I'm always cheering for her :3

I'm also trying to follow the newest Manga-scans, but I never understand them. xD

What's even more troubling is that there isn't any thread for the anime in neither the fansub nor the licensed forum.

I'm relatively new to the anime (just finished it last week) and I found it to be really good, if a little slow at some points (when a lot of air time is taken up by the concert / competition sequences and there isn't much plot on-screen).

I'm just starting out on the scanlated manga...

You must have missed it, cause, there is highly active thread on its anime, here, in the fansub sub-forum.

That is the main difference between anime and manga. The manga has to keep the musical part shorter, since you cannot really feel it regardless of how much you try, but, you can definitely feel it in the anime (especially if you have some interest in classical music).

I just started reading the manga after watching both the anime and the live action. I actually appreciate the full musical scenes being a musician myself, it's rare where shows such as this one give music its respect instead of cutting it short in favor of complete plot. It was sortof like a game of name that song.

i also started reading the manga after watching the anime and the live action. the manga is great i am as far as close to the end of anime. its as funny as the show and they are pretty close storywise.

i think the manga covers the most deeper parts of the story.... after the going to Paris..... damn their relationship better..

Really? I have only read the first story arc in the manga (where Chiaki and Nodame play the piano duet together for their teacher). I thought the anime covered the manga matierial perfectly, with the added bonus of the actual music in the anime. For that reason alone I would consider the anime actually supperior.

I'm planning on reading more of the manga mainly just to continue the story beyond the end of the anime (although given the popularity of the show in Japan, another season isn't out of the question). I'm going to be picking up the next few volumes of the manga at the local book store this week. I guess I'll just have to put on some classical CDs while I am reading...

I've tried "reading" RAW scans before, but even series where there is more action than dialog, I always found it just too hard to follow what was going on. I would think you would lose almost everything that makes Nodame great, if you could not read the dialog...

The Nodame Cantabile thread in the Fansubs section was very active while the show was being aired and activly subbed. Now that the season over and the fansubs are done, the discussion has dropped off and the thread may have scrolled off of the first couple pages.

Personally, I consider the performace scenes just as enjoyable as the comedy or plot scenes, but then I'm a big fan of classical music.

This manga is great! It picks up right where the anime left off. Nodame in Paris has been really fun but I can't wait for the return of the rising star Orchestra.

Yeah, I guess we can see RS Orchestra pretty soon. There are some hints in latest lessons (chapters).

Spoiler for up to lesson 116:

First of all, Kiyora is already on her way back to Japan. Second, Mine offers Chiaki a chance so he can perform with Nodame in RS Orchestra.

Oh, poor Nodame. Being banned from enter tournament by Professor Auclair first, then finding out Chiaki and Rui will perform the Piano Concerto for the Left Hand in D major by Maurice Ravel (the piece she wants to play most). Rui attacks on Nodame's weakness again.

There is another one. It starts in chapter 103 and 104 when Rui's mom visits her, and in chapter 115, Elise informs Chiaki the time and composition for the concerto are finally decided. It will be in 15th of May (it is currently around January).

I must say, Rui and Nodame, they are too good at taking care of each other. Are they set to be rivals, in all kinds of meanings?

I am very bad at summarizing, but I will try my best. Here is summaries of chapter 101-104.

Spoiler for chapter 101:

Nodame receives a phone call that she gets a offer of salon performance. She is happily running home but finds Chiaki be ready to move out. She rushes to Chiaki's bedroom crying on his bed. She thinks Chiaki disliking her. Chiaki explains to her that his family used to live here, he thinks it is time he can leave the past behind. Nodame feels relieved and starts planning how they can have real dates and continuing her perverted behaviours towards Chiaki. Just when Chiaki thinks all are settled, his mom is at his door.

Spoiler for chapter 102:

Chiaki's mom asks Chiaki for reasons of moving out. Chiaki somehow holds back the main reason (he doesn't say a single word about his father). She is not satisfied but decides to let go. Rest of the chapter is about her meeting with residents in the building. Tania and Yunlong declares they want to enter a tournament (both are pissed off upon finding the tournament they decide to take is the same one). And one more resident is introduced. A 17 year old Hungarian girl, majored in composition and playing a theremin, she never meet with other residents before, except the Japanese painter, be considered by them as a ghost.

Spoiler for chapter 103:

This chapter is about Rui, her school life and the night class in Professor Auclair's home. After playing she asks Auclair for comments but he only says she done well and he is hungary wanting to eat. While they are dining, Auclair asks many question about the food they are eating. Rui fails to give satisfying answers. At end, Auclair questiones why she comes to French (if she can't appreciate and enjoy gourmet food). The second day, Rui requires to see Nodame's class with Auclair and finds it is way more active than hers. In a depressing mood, she comes home and finds her mom is there with lots of concert offers. Of course, she accepts none of them. (BTW Rui's room is messy enough to rival Nodame's)

Spoiler for chapter 104:

Second day, her mom asks her again to choose at least one offer. Rui refuses and run away. She is hungary but has no money to buy food, so she calls Chiaki just at time the youth ballet company breaks in his rehearsal. Rui explains her condition to Chiaki and begs (while playing cute) him save her from starvation. Dining, Chiaki talks about food can make people happy, so did the concerto they had together. This reminds Rui that music can be fun thing not just responsibility. Later, she comes back and tells her mom that she can agree one concert, but the conductor must be Chiaki.

Summarizing chapter 106 is too time- and energy-consuming. So I only made two chapter worth summary this time. I will continue after final exam.

Spoiler for 105:

This chapter starts with a news report on death of a Italian Maestro during a concert rehearsal in Paris. The next a few pages are all about various people's reactions towards the news, especially Stresemann who is seriously stunned by the news and loses his joyful self. Then, the scene shifts to Lou-Marlet orchestra, while serveral members are talking about the Italian conductor and Stressemann, who had studied under the same instructor but were widely known for bad relationship (Elise says Stresemann had cursed Lippi, the Italian conductor, to die for over forty years), Chiaki receives a phone call from Elise informing he will have a performance with Rui and Wiltord orchestra, and asking him to visit and to comfort Stresemann in Vienna when he is free. Sometime later, in the salon where Nodame will perform, people talk about a rumor that Viera would conduct the concert originally assigned to Lippi. And this rumor turns out to be true. On the way to Nadame's solo concert, Chiaki meets Viera in a bus (Paris's subway/underground is in a strike).

Spoiler for 106:

Viera asks if Chiaki wants to see his rehearsal, Chiaki hesitates at first but finally chooses Viera's rehearsal over Nodame's salon concert. Shifting back Nodame, her performance starts. The pieces she plays in first half are Italian Concerto, BWV 971 by J. S. Bach, serveral "songs" from Songs without Words by F. Mendelssohn (most likely three she has played: vol 1, Op. 19b: No 1, Andante con moto in E major, vol 6, Op. 67: No. 4 Presto in C major ("Spinnerlied"), and Vol 4, Op 53: No. 3 Presto agitato in G major), and Polonaise-Fantaisie in A-flat major, Opus 61 by F. Chopin.

Between the two halves, she receives a message from Chiaki saying he can't come. Nodame comments that, as a professional player, she won't be affected by such a minor problem. Then she comes into second half. The pieces she plays are Deux Legendes No.1: St. Francois d' Assise: La predication aux oiseaux by Franz Liszt, Iberia: Book 1: No. 3, Iberia Fête-dieu à Seville by Isaac Albéniz, and the encore, Sleigh Ride by Leroy Anderson.
