Yah, he had Avalon. It was given to him by head of Eizebern family who had it for generations.
It was originally inside Irisviel, she gave it later to him and in the end it ended in Shirou. And boy ,did it saved Shirou trough Fate/Zero and Stay Night.... |

The incantation can be heard by the summonee, if Gilgamesh is any indication. It's respectful. Not like he was in danger or anything so he had time to do the incantation. Shirou, on the other hand, lucked out with the catalyst because he was too worried about becoming a Shiroukabob... again.

So if all you need is the catalyst, and most mages will have 60 years to get one between wars, why they even bother with the incantation? Seems like a waste of time aside from summoning Berserker.

Yes but think about it. With the catalyst I don’t need to say a word: why are they saying it? Besides won’t make more sense to get a good catalyst and then summon a powerful Servant than to hope the Grail doesn’t screw you over with a useless Heroic Spirit? In any way my question is for those that actually use it.

As I mentioned before: it's respectful to the Servant being summoned. They can hear it. Gilgamesh says as much when he comments on his own summoning to Kirei.
Think about it. If you were a renowned hero of old, would YOU appreciate it if your summoner did the equivalent of "Hey, you, get your ass out here."?

In F/Z, Zouken made Kariya encite extra lines in the incantation in order to add the "Berserk" property to his servant. Was this to make sure he would get Berserker as a servant, or to increase his servants strength? If it's the latter, what is the terms of conditions of adding extra properties to servants? I don't see any reason not to do it, but the only master that did it was Kariya.

It'd make sense. While Shirou wasn't a good master to begin with, his connection with Saber was pretty bad due to the way she was summoned. Instead of a standard mana flow that other masters gave, he had to manually inject mana into her. Otherwise, she only had what she was able to produce/store.

To be a bit more precise, the extra lines causes him to summon Berserker no matter what. Being summoned as Berserker is what increases the Servant's stats, not the incantation itself.
The only classes who can be specified beforehand are Berserker and Assassin. |

It seems the Berserker enchantment is only added after the main enchantment is done. This could mean if two people where both trying to summon Berserker at the same time only the first would get him and the other would get his servant placed in a different class. I'm purely speculating so I could be wrong. |
