End of world animes
Ok i know 2.
Stellvia (well its begining of a new world), and macross/robotech. Is there anymore - i seem to love end of world type animes =) or ones where an entire planet is put at risk. Edit: forgot one - main end of world one I have seen - Blue Gender

Interlude OVA (licensed) - They don't actually reveal that the world already ended until the last ep.
Gaogaigar Final OVA - mecha anime. Shin Getter Robo (licensed) - mecha anime. Japan basically causes the apocalypse. |

Theres a whole bunch of 'End of world' series in the mecha genre lol
Evangelion - Definitely end of the world Eureka 7 - End of the world, not Earth though Top Wo Nerae! - Probably counts as end of the solar system or maybe even end of the galaxy. Ideon - End of the Universe lol There are quite alot of planet threatening mecha anime, though I'm not sure if they do fit directly as end of world though

Zegapain - Will be spoilerific if I say it (since it is not revealed from episode 1) but it definitely has an end of the world setting. It has its fair share of mecha and 3D battles.
Soukyuu no Fafner - A bunch of teenagers trying to survive all odds on their island base against an onslaught of unknown enemies. Also mecha. Hokuto no Ken - A war torn world where nuclear weapons eradicated civilizations and a new age of chaos and violence ensues. A very fighting oriented anime based on the popular manga. |

Cowboy Bebop: Knocking on Heaven's Door
This is the end of the world as seen when beautiful, golden butterflies dance around your head ... it's a symbolic movie with a lot of action, and a lot of insight to the characters in the Cowboy Bebop universe as well. This may be seen standalone - it's beautiful, or seen as a companion to the Cowboy Bebop series - which gives a look into why Spike has made that decision that he did in the later episodes.

Sousei no aquarion - This series is mediocre imo, but it fits the criteria. Some people seem to like it so it's worth a mention. It's a lot like Evangelion. Though the pilots orgasm whenever they fuse into robot form.
Tideline Blue - A global catastrophe results in six billion deaths and almost all of earth covered in water. Kind of like waterworld, with emphasis on a boy and his adventure on a submarine. Turn A Gundam - Gundam series set in the future after an event that threatened all of earth. The new war between the earth and moon may repeat the mistakes of the past. |

I get what you are saying. My examples were just sort of similar concepts, the Matrix being something I could stomache (since it does not "break" the anime, as I put it, because it doesn't in any way identify itself as fictional). .Hack was just an example of my disposition towards anything that doesn't give an impression of true escapism.
Geh... it's kind of pointelss for me even to comment I guess. I hardly remember the ending to the movie. Sort of unrelated... I was just rereading a manga today... the ending which I had always loved, suddenly turned sour when I realized a totally different meaning for the that few sentences. |
