Things can be predictable and still quite entertaining.
Case in point, Psycho-Pass where the latest episode confirms something people have speculated for weeks and still the episode was over before I knew it.

Most anime series in general lack unpredictability, imo. (I know that no story is unpredictable all of the time, that's pure nonsense. But unpredictable plot developments are seen too infrequently.) Anime is too formulaic, and it will probably continue to be for some time, as it's very rare that we get series which are gems that vastly break the mold. However, that static formula itself is what keeps people coming back for more in the first place. It's a frustrating cycle... But I guess what I'm saying is that no matter what author they use, or no matter how Urobuchi may try to evolve and/or change his style, those of us who recognize the patterns (which will be most of us) are going to have a hard time being overly impressed or surprised -- if at all.

Quoted for truth. It all depends on the execution.

Here's what I gathered on the official website

Quote:
This anime is written for late teenagers to those who just started their early 20s. Basically, we're aiming to tackle the issues and the sense of wandering many people have when they graduated and started living in the society.

With that in mind, I made this story a little bit differently compared to my previous works. I hope that the story of the people's tough life to find their place in society can be told well.
I'm a late teenager who pursuits curiosity and human issues, so I think it will fit the show very well, and I hope it's more of a coming-of-age sci-fi drama with some action. Seeing on how it gets a bit different from other works makes me curious to see how dark it will goes on as the story progresses.

This is great ! I'll definitively watch it when it airs, so I'm happy to see it taking over Love Live!, since both shows have every elements that appeals to me !

No offense to Urobuchi fans, but I'm tired of people hyping Gargantia to be as depressing as Gen's other works. I mean, I liked Madoka Magica and I'm currently enjoying Psycho-Pass, but using grimdark elements in every work Gen is involved looked nice at first but gets overdone after a while. I want him to try something refreshing in Gargantia so that it'll break lines that Gen is unable to do, such as making it lighthearted. I really hope the interview he said for it doesn't end up something trollable like he did in Madoka Magica.

It probably will be. He changed the ending of Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom (Game ending was more positive. Trolling was worse here.). We know what happened with Madoka and Psycho-Pass is going down the same route.

Urobuchi fans aren't tuning in for an uplifting title with a happy ending imo.

Hopefully the trolling will probably be subtle and not blatant like he did in Madoka Magica and I can't seem to find much trolling in P-P though aside from episode 16's twitter thing, since it was already darker from the start. I wouldn't be surprised if there's no troll at all, which is what I prefer in Gargantia.

Madoka had a pretty nice and fitting ending. Not as happy as it could have been, but not really depressing either. There was hope. It was proof Urobuchi doesn't only have DESPAIR on his mind. Of course, that may all change with the third movie...

Anyway, I think it'd be interesting if Urobuchi betrayed people's expectations with this show. Obviously, it's not going to be all lighthearted and fluffy, but it doesn't have to be grimdark either. A middle ground can be found.

Making a middle ground is fitting for Gargantia : it's true that this is not a colorful adventure show with shounen-tier plot, but I really hope Gen try to do something refreshing by not making it too grimdark either. A few important character deaths is acceptable, and I'd imagine the relationship between Gen and people's expectations to be slightly different than his previous works, so that the viewers will get a good grasp that Gen's diverse range of genres are more than just than a sea of darkness. From what I gathered in the interview, when he said "I made it a little bit different from my previous works" I really hope he wasn't joking like he said in Madoka, and I hope I'm right once shit hits the fan (= when the story gets darker) during the show's airing.

BTW, is it just me, or did the show have strange ImaBoku vibes when I foresee the show's direction ?

Phantom anime ending is not Urobuchi responsibility. And Ein's ending is not even canon (Phantom don't have a canon ending)

Well you can't help it if people expect this to be grimdark since that's pretty much been a major aspect of all his works so far. I'm not sure how using it all the time can make it overdone since that's just the way he writes in general. I think the thing about this show is that the trailer gave off a very adventurous feel which is a genre that tends to be mostly uplifting due to it's very nature, hence why people think this will start out uplifting (and hence why people are expecting an obvious troll). But you know after watching the second trailer, I'm starting to wonder myself if it's actually going to be all that adventurous.

But hey, who knows? Urobuchi has been switching between different genres for a while now, from mob crime, to straight up monster horror, to magical girls, to urban fantasy and now more recently political sci-fi. And it's interesting to note that with the latest transition into political sci-fi, his writing style has changed from writing characters with their own individual drama/issues/demons/identities, to characters and their relationship to society as a whole. That may just be for PsychoPass rather than a permanent change but it also shows his writing style can change depending on the genre. So maybe this won't be a troll after all.

From what I gathered in /a/ (like this one), I'm betting that the director, Kazuya Murata (who previously worked on Fullmetal Alchemist : The Sacred Star of Milos), is the one who imagined Gargantia's concept while Urobuchi will only serve as a main scriptwritter. However, since Murata will control over Urobuchi's ideas, so maybe it wouldn't turn as overly grimdark as most people predicted.

I think they both worked on the original concept together, but Murata was involved in the creative process before Urobuchi was brought in, so he might be closer to it.

The individual pathways have true ("good") endings and the bad endings iirc. Anime version's last few minutes did not reflect either one. It was in the true pathway and then went off a cliff. 2 main females pathways were very close and it came down to one event in the anime that determined whose pathway you were in. After that event, you were in the main pathway to the "true" ending.

He was responsible for ep. 25. ANN doesn't have who was responsible for ep. 26.

The first half would probably be the guy learning and adjusting to the new environment anyway.

Spoiler for slight derail:
