social networking sites like twitter finally has some great use... the tweets serve as public health data that is feed on an algorithm to analyse and predict public health statuses and can give public health warnings - http://bigthink.com/ideafeed/algorit...g-any-symptoms

Russian investor’s $3 million prize for physics

Quote:
A major goal of the awards is to raise public awareness of physics, partly through the popular lecture each winner will be invited to deliver.

“This is an encouragement for them to do a public talk and explain what physics is about,” Milner said. “The problem is that modern fundamental physics is so far from you and me.

“The mathematics has become so much more complicated that you need at least 10 years to understand it,” he said. “Fundamental physics has advanced so far from the understanding of most people that there is really a big disconnect.”

That is a problem, he believes, and not only because it deprives so many of us of an understanding of one of the most beautiful and consequential human undertakings.

Big future discoveries in physics will require massive, global public investment, and we will be prepared to support that only if we understand what our scientists are up to. The winners, Milner said, were enthusiastic about this part of the project.

These are grand ambitions. But the question Guth has been asked most often this past week is what he will do with his prize. He sighed gently when I put that query to him yet again.

“My wife and I talked about it a little but then decided we’re too dazed,” he said. “When we get over the shock, we’ll decide what to do.”
I would say there are more physicists who would deserve the prize, but unfortunately they are eating, living, and sleeping under CIA, SVR, MI6, and all the major intelligence agencies.

Vexx would probably qualify if he is allowed to speak out about his high-density munition hyperaccelerator and repurpose it for launching exploration modules into space.

Most of all, you have to be disciplined and you have to save, even if you hate our current financial system. Because if you don't save, then you're guaranteed to end up with nothing.

Well this is scary.

These fish could be harbingers of a major human health crisis

Quote:
Bad news, everyone. Researchers have discovered that 15% of the coral trout living in Australia's great Barrier Reef are suffering from what's been described as a scalier version of melanoma, a deadly form of skin cancer. That's unsettling for a number of reasons, but there are two big ones that should immediately give you pause.

1) This is the first case of melanoma ever documented in a wild fish population.
2) The Great Barrier Reef is directly beneath a gaping hole in Earth's ozone layer.

Payback Against China:

"The U.S. is being more open about its growing body of evidence documenting
Chinese Cyber War attacks on America and the West. This openness was prompted
by a Wikileaks emails from last year that made reference to U.S. and European
efforts to track the growing number of hacker attacks on government and military
organizations. The emails revealed that Western computer security officials have
been increasingly aware of details of the Chinese efforts over the last five years.
Until the Wikileaks incident, this was kept secret because the Chinese have been
careful to hide their hacks, if only so they could return and not have to work their
way through much stronger defenses. The Chinese hackers also kept a low profile
because their governments' only response to victims was "it wasn't us, we know
nothing, we are being hacked too." That last item is true, the first two are not."

For the aviation buffs out there.

"We didn’t know what 90 percent of the switches did"

"John Manclark was the commander of the 4477th Test & Evaluation Squadron
from 1985-87. At the time, a few of us who took an unhealthy interest in such
matters knew a bit about what 4477TES was, to wit: It flew Soviet aircraft, and it
was secret. (Later, early internet searches started to reveal odd details of
biographies, such as Manclark's claim to have flown the YF-110 and YF-113.)

Some details of the program were declassified in 2006. It was codenamed
Constant Peg, Constant after the callsign of Maj Gen Hoyt Vandenberg Jr and Peg
being the wife of Col Gail Peck, another of its founders."

See:

http://www.aviationweek.com/Blogs.as...3-fff9b8f2f73d

A few more quotes:

"On the MiG-21: "It had no gas – a point-defense fighter.
"We didn’t know what 90 percent of the switches did. We changed the ASI and
parts of the oxygen system. We had one switch that we just labeled BOMB
EXPLODE."

""The MiG-23 was a nightmare, maintenance was a nightmare. The guys hated
flying it, and we checked people out when they had 3-5 months left."

""In 1987 we had the AIM-9P, which was designed to reject flares, and when we
used US flares against it would ignore them and go straight for the target. We
had the Soviet flares – they were dirty, and none of them looked the same – and
the AIM-9P said 'I love that flare'."

If I ever get myself a car, I'm going label all the switches in cyrilic and put "BOMB EXPLODE" on one of them just because.

I bet Vexx knows more than what that guy wrote about the F117.

You can now deposit checks using the Bank of America iOS app
http://www.latimes.com/business/tech...,4543493.story
Quote:
Bank of America customers will no longer have to go to their bank's ATMs to deposit checks. They can now do it from their iPhones or iPads.

The company updated its iPhone app Wednesday to include the feature, which earlier this year it announced would arrive on its mobile devices. The feature was introduced to the iPad late last month.

The new feature can be accessed by signing into your account through the app. Once signed in, you will see three new buttons near the top. The one on the right reads "Deposits," which you click to get to the feature. The first time you use the feature you will have to click "Get started," and you'll have to accept the terms of service, but then you're good to go.
Doesn't directly apply for a non-Apple Bank-of-Montreal user like me but woooow!
Can't wait for when it gets to canadian banks and android service. I wouldn't have to plan out when it's convenient to deposit my cheques anymore. (Such a pain, BMO moved to all the weird places that I don't visit)

This just feels like it takes out a lot of the safeguards put in place to prevent fraud. But anything to make more money, I guess?

I cried. I admit, I cried.

Seriously though, that's an astounding tech story. You don't often see how technology can really help one individual person. You hear or read about it, but not often do you see it. Very awesome video.
