Yes; "Mugi" is another word for barley; as in mugi-cha, or barley tea.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mugicha

"Gabo" is short for gabocha, or pumpkin.

Nah, I'm just messing with you. She's just making those sounds for the heckuva it.

I could see Nodame making pumpkin tea.

And even if Nodame becomes this mega talented pianist, there's still no guarantees that she ends up with Chiaki.

She needs to play because she wants to imo.

I actually kind of respect that she isn't aiming to be professional and only plays because she enjoys it. Chiaki, especially in the drama, is so serious about what he does that he forgets to enjoy what he likes. The most important thing that Nodame has to teach Chiaki is how to have fun with music again.

But I thought wanting to be a professional is the reason why people go to specialised music academies. I always thought that those that go this far are meaning to do something useful with the training career wise.

Did you not hear what Nodame wanted to do in the future? She mentioned that she wanted to be a elementary teacher.

I was left with the same WTF reaction to Nodame's career plans as Nina and orion. Even the OP animation sets us up to think that she aspires to being a professional musician as she grows from a child playing a recorder to a young woman carrying a case of music.

I'm glad this is made clearer in the manga, but the anime left me wondering why she's in a music academy.

I don't know if there are music teachers in Japanese elementary schools, but going into some form of arts education is a good enough reason to go to a music school, I think (although most conservatories in the US have specific arts education departments.)

The point is that she doesn't aspire to be the best-- she just wants enjoy what she does and share that with others.

Rewatched 8+9 and remembered some things I forgot to mention before.

- They were betting in euros rather than yen, that surprised me a little.
- Has it really been 45 years since Franz saw Minako? They would have to be over 60, but they don't seem that old.
- Chiaki got his artsy shot while conducting!

Just watched ep9 and absolutely love this anime... Aahh nodame... so oblivious to her own insane musical talents! If she acknowledged her own skills she'd probably have a hundred chiakis fawning over her.

Yes. Regarding episodes 8, 9, 10:

Spoiler:

I really, really, really want to see what the heck her childhood was
like and how she got the way she is. I keep hearing about it from
the manga readers and drama watchers but hope we'll see a little
about it in upcoming episodes of the anime. You don't just get that
way without some kind of weird environment growing up.

And:
I see Mine has an admirer of sorts. Heh. Cute. And we see the
return of Saiko the madonna into Chiaki's ever-busy life. And, if I
ever need a Mongoose costume I know who to call.

Finally got around to episode so 9 so im a little late. I enjoyed this episode like all the others. It was nice to see chiaki come into his own even if it was only to fill in. Although he is quite cranky and stubborn, when he is consumed in music we get to see the real him.

On the other hand we also got to see what happens when Noda is away from him. Im really curious to know where she learned piano from. Its obvious that she was born with the talent but as the teacher said she doesnt have the drive for it. I respect her for that, she plays because its fun. She already mentioned that she wanted to be a kindergarten teacher. But she seems to have trouble reading music this must stem from something in her childhood or her training.

I think we are going to see a gap appear between them for a while. But as i noticed Chiaki also became worried when he found what had happened to her, during her master training.

best moment was when Chiaki was describing Nodame by the sounds she screams.

I thought that even if you play for fun, you still have a drive to improve.

Since this is a performing arts school, there should be some drive there to succeed. "Fun" to me implies a hobby. At this level, it's "career" imo. You can have fun in a career, but it's still a career imo.

Isn't a music teacher a double major? Besides, is music even taught in kindergarten?

My thoughts on episode 9:

The opening and ending scenes of this episode gave me serious Honey and Clover vibes. I know everyone's been saying that for the past 9 episodes but come on, that opening scene in the van just brought a flashback of the H&C trip to me.

I'm kind of surprised at Chiaki's niceness during the rehearsals. Granted, he is with a group of very skilled musicians this time that he has faith in but I never thought I'd hear him make those light jokes during a music rehearsal, especially at this relatively early point in the story. Other then that I enjoyed seeing a sidestory that wasn't included in the live action, and I have to admit the parts with Stresseman were very funny. Nodame's "orangutan"-like behavior was also amusing. I'm looking forward the upcoming performances, I hope they do justice to the Rachmaninov.

I don't know about in Japan, but at specialized music programs in universities here, usually Music education is offered as a major within the music program.

Yeah, it looks like it's handled in the college music dept in the US too with the degree in education. So if she's wanting to be a kindergarten music teacher, what's she doing in a performing arts school?

Is the way to getting the degree different in Japan?

I'm sure the answer shall come in the future --- if not, then there's a good chance its in the later part of the manga.

Eh, we are talking about Nodame. Why are you folks expecting her to act rationally? Remember, this is the person who gave Chiaki a box full of honey with whole lemons floating in it as a way of declaring her love. I'm sure she is as capable of becoming a kindergarten teacher now as she will be when she finishes her music degree, so why bother going to school? Nodame said so herself in the episode covering Sakura's problems: ""There's still love, encounters, and heart-throbs."

Because the Japanese system seems different from the US system to me. If they don't allow you to go back to college for that education degree, then someone in Nodame's position could be screwed career wise.

Which was why I was wondering why would someone who wants to be a teacher is in a performing arts school and not a college with a music department? If she is in the wrong place, then she took a spot that should have been given to someone else imo.

So, I'll just wait like Shiroth suggested.
