What position do you sleep in?

i've heard from a friend that whatever position you're used to sleeping when you're a baby you'll probably sleep for the rest of your life, dunno if it's true though. i've also come across personality tests regarding sleeping positions, they're interesting but i wouldn't know how accurate those are either.

anyway, i usually sleep on my left side, and i curl up into a ball even when i'm perfectly warm (it's a problem when i'm at a sleepover or something...everyone piles their blankets on me cause they think i'm cold i appreciate the gesture though lol)

I used to sleep chest down on the mattress as a baby. Then I found myself sleeping on my side more and more as I grew up. Now I almost always lay on my right side initially as I fall asleep but eventually I wake up on my chest again. I guess I'm doomed to risk suffocation in my sleep forever. :>

I like to cuddle in a body-sized pillow too but I never seem to maintain my grip in the morning. It always seems to slip to the side.

*A side note: Chinese medicine encourages people to sleep with your backs to the mattress as sleeping in any other position - especially on the side - risks future spine damage. Sleeping on the side causes the spine to gradually bend to the left or right depending on how you lay down at night. You may not know this, but crossing your legs too much can do this too.

I sleep on the side or on my back. I can't stand sleeping on my chest, it feels like I'm trapped or something like that.

(PS: Why didn't you make this a poll? You should be able to edit it.)

I sleep on either side, no real preference. I don't know how I slept as a baby... but it's because of a baby that I sleep the way I do now ^_^ My 8 month old sleeps in bed with me, so I am usually cuddled up to him on my side, which ever side he is sleeping at

oh good idea! i'll try that. edit: it doesn't work :/

@topic(kinda): ooh an i've read that sleeping on your side is harmful to your knees unless you have something separating them. this was written by a pillow company selling specially shaped pillows to put between your knees though, so i dunno about that.

I usually sleep on my sides. I try to sleep on my back, but somehow thats the hardest position for me to sleep because sometimes I roll around unconciously. Though, sleeping on your back is the healthiest way.

I sleep in several different positions actually. But I suppose it really depends on the weather. For instance, if its winter time, I curl up like a ball. But if its summer time I'm usually more spread out.

I use a memory foam pillow *the cheap one, I bought from Wal-Mart for me legs/knees* and i use the expensive one for my head. Memory foam feels weird at first, but they sure are comfortable.

Why you don't like it? It's my favorite pose.

geh.... what an odd thread. Ah well, I change positions 4 or 5 times a night.
Usually left side, right side, chest down. If I sleep on my back I snore like a ravenous Deinonychus and she-who-is-cute-and-small kicks me til I stop making noise.

How do you know what position(s) you are sleeping in when you are, um, asleep?

I sleep in all positions; on my chest, on my back, on my side (both left or right) -- whichever is the most comfortable for me at that point in time. There was one physical trainer who told me, I think out of jest, that you should raise your legs while sleeping on your back. That way, you ensure that your lower back gets proper support while you are lying down in bed. Now, I'm not sure how you could possibly keep your legs up the whole night (perhaps with a pillow), but if you try the position for a few minutes, you do see what he means -- it does in fact feel more comfortable for your lower back. (I'm old enough, and stressed enough from work, to know what a sore lower back feels like.)

This thread reminds me of an article I was reading

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/3112170.stm

Generally speaking, the position you wake up in is the position you would usually sleep in from what I have seen. If your curious set up a camera to tape you throughout the night I usually sleep with two blankets during winter but sometimes in the morning I wake up with only one on the bed

I sleep on my back but my arms aren't always at the sides. Sometimes they'll be together on my chest or wherever.

To correct any issues I use a memory foam, bought from Linens&Things and they are very comfortable and relaxing. I would advise everyone to get a memory foam if possible as it helps a lot.

I sleep on my side, with one supplely muscled arm sprawled across my finely chiseled face; the other pressed firmly underneath my bare and glistening body.

The raised legs (using a pillow) is recommended by some back specialists ... I know it helps when dealing with a strained back.

I sleep on my stomach, kinda on my side. I always have, and I can't really fall asleep when I'm lying flat on my back; I get a weird headache afterwards sometimes if I do that.
