Star Trek: Axanar (2014 fan film)

A project that was kickstarted this year has started to bare fruit as the "Prelude to Axanar" documentary nears its release date. That will be used to kickstart the actual film due later this year.

The benefit of the first Kickstarter run was that they made ten times the money they set out to make, thus allowing them to make some of the practical effects for the film early (makeup for the Klingons and CGI for the space battles).

Here is the first released trailer for "Prelude to Axanar"

The story is about Captain Garth of Izar, who was a character seen in the 1969 Star Trek episode "Whom Gods Destroy". In that episode he was a former great starship captain, a idol of Captain Kirk, whom had gone made in recent years. This is a story from about 25 years before that episode, during a war with the Klingon Empire that ws briefly touched upon from time to time. A war that the Federation was losing. This is the story of who Garth and Star Fleet turned the tide of the war around.

The Prelude to Axanar is a 20 or so minute long documentary style film to lead up to the full film about the Battle of Axanar.

This trailer stars:

Tony Todd as Admiral Ramirez
John G. Hertzler as Captain Samuel Travis
Kate Vernon as Captain Sonya Alexander
Alec Peters as Captain Kelvar Garth of Izar
Richard Hatch as Klingon Commander Kharn
Gary Graham as Ambassador Soval

The Axanar film will also include Michael Hogan as Captain Robert April (of the USS Enterprise)

Also a sound effect lesson that used the major battle scene in the trailer as its subject matter. Lots of Klingon and Federation ships involved.

Prelude to Axanar will debut at Comic-Con on the evening of the 26th.

Star Trek: Axanar, the full film, is suppose to come out in 2015 after filming is completed this fall. Depending of course of funding, building the sets, casting the rest of the actors, and post-production. The extra money from the first Kickstarter will got to get things like makeup pieces for the Klingons done, and for the CGI ship combat scenes to be made. Also to I image some to get sets at least started before the second Kickstarter beings after the release of Prelude to Axanar (as that 20 or so minute long mockumentary will be used to promote the full on film.)

Thank you for the update.

It looks like it will be a fantastic edition to the Star Trek external universe.

The Kickstarter for the main film and related projects (tie in material filmed with the Phase II group) started today and went over $50,000 in half a day. Though they are looking for $275,000 to get everything done.

They also have a nearly 5 minute long trailer from Prelude to Axanar out, as it will come out tomorrow at both Comic-con and Dragon-con.

"Prelude to Axanar" came out for the donors last night. It is 21 minutes long and worth ever cent spent on it.

It will be out for everyone else on their Kickstarter page on Wednesday (barring technical issues). They are already over $85,000 towards the full film to come out (hopefully) around August of 2015.

One thing: Richard Hatch make a damn good Klingon. In the serious and dangerously intelligence kind we've not seen much of since the Next Generation started.

The first Kickstarter goal for the film ($100,000) has been reached.

The film is estimated to cost $650,000. They were going to do two Kickstarters are different times as the production when along. However the first one doesn't end until August 24th...so there is time that they could potentially reach the full total without needing a second Kickstarter.

Thanks for the link!

After watching it, the documentary-style of the prelude was something different and worked in the context presented. The only thing I really didn't like is the starship designs that looked like they were taken from the new ST films (saying that they were kitbashed would be a compliment imho),
Spoiler for and...:

The ships are basically the 2009 ships scaled down to fit the older stuff, as well as using the original styled engine nacelles. The main trouble with this era is that there really aren't any shipd that are known. The new Star Trek's ships are already there and provide a style for the era. Also the USS Kelvin is considered to have existed in both universes based on when they would have split.

Spoiler for over Axanar?:

I still don't like it, but that's a reason I can live with.

As for the part in the spoiler, I really didn't think of that! I can now see how that could be used to cause a major misdirection.

We won't know for sure until the film comes out next year.

There is a rumor they they will be using some FASA designs for the film. Prelude mentions the Marklin-class destroyer, which was a FASA design that was on the cover of their suppliment for the Four Years War. Only a top view was ever given by FASA. I don't forsee then using the Loknar, Larson, and Nelson class ships, but that would be interesting to see in action side by side with with Kelvin based designs.

Yes it would be interesting to see the old FASA designs in this new fan-movie.
There were never really that many ship designs given in the original series outside of the Constitution class Hvy Cruiser, Hermes Scout, Saladin Destroyer, Ptolemy tug, and Federation class dreadnaught (which I would love to see in action in any Star Trek production).

I agree that the information "leaked" to K'arth's forces is a trap to lure the new D7s out and destroy them.
If memory serves, the Constitution class is equal to 3 D7s and that's what we see in the "documentary" trailer.
I didn't think the original D7 had photon torpedo launchers.
Wasn't the hole at the front of the D7 the deflector dish in TOS?

Over time, that hole has become the torpedo tube on Klingon ships. Since Enterprise establishes that the Klingons had photon torpedoes before the humans did almost a century before this war, it is reasonable that the Klingons would still be using torpedoes as a main weapon system.

What we have not seen is the standard Klingon distupters being used. Probably because the programing for CGI photon torpedoes is well established.

They did make it so the early D7 doesn't have the aft torpedo tube like the movie era ones had. The CG model has the impulse dives close together on that model rather than spread apart with a hole between them like in The Motion Picture. I think this CG model is based on the one used in the remastered TOS episodes like "The Enterprise Incident".

Interesting. There are three days left before the end of their first movie Kickstarter and they are presently just over $6,000 left to go until they reach their second push goal of $375,000. From an original goal of $100,000. That amount would pay for all the preproduction work they need plus the California studio rent for a year or two, plus a few shorts to tie in with Star Trek: Phase II's fan group that produce out in New York.

It takes a lot of money to make films that look professional. They managed to get enough with the "Prelude to Axanar" to get a lot of the makeup work and extra special effects shots worked on already.

EDIT:

With the Kickstarter finished, they managed just over $638,000, largely thanks to support from George Takei, who's fans and friends managed to add about $200,000 to the project.

'Star Trek: Axanar' Fan Film Kicks Fundraising into Warp Drive:

"A crew of "Star Trek" fans is taking the beloved franchise where it's never been
before: For a fraction of the cost of a Hollywood film, they plan to create a feature-
length production funded by crowdsourcing.

The project, called "Star Trek: Axanar", aims to raise $250,000 in 32 days and
officially launched Thursday (July 9) on the crowdsourcing website Indiegogo. Funds
began rolling in prior to the release of an official media announcement, and the
project has already raised more than 65 percent of its goal as of this afternoon (July
10).

An initial fundraising campaign for the film, launched last year on Kickstarter, raised
more than six times its $100,000 initial goal. At the time, the filmmakers estimated
this feature film would cost up to $750,000, but the new campaign has announced a
budget of just under $1 million. ['Star Trek: Prelude to Axanar' in Pictures]"

This is very aggravating.
Especially since this movie looks to be better than ANYTHING that JJ Abrams has made (Star Trek or Star Wars) and would be an excellent addition to the original Roddenberry ST universe.
