You know he's gonna make it through this, but wow. Now I'm glad Lancer didn't kill him when could. Love Shinji suffering.

Archer vs Shirou awesome!

I actually preferred the way the visual novel and the movie handled the Archer/Shirou fight. The change wasn't bad, just more philosophical in nature rather then more action oriented. That scene where Shirou's version of his reality marble breaks into a burst of dawn and gradually overwhelms the more smoky dark haze of Archer's reality marble was incredibly well done.

I honestly hoped that the Reality Marble would start to look like the version from the ED (optionally with the cogs falling down in an epic manner).
Well, let us see what it will look like when Shirou uses it against Gil... and if it looks like in the ED, the jokes from MAL with get even more pissy ;P

The Shirou-Archer conflict was a difficult thing to portray but I'd say it was done perfectly.

There's some weird things in the episode, though...
like the giant swords Archer projected. Where'd he copy those from? Anime?
And wasn't Gil supposed to take Shinji to the temple before morphing him? It looked like he was just left to writhe somewhere in the woods.

I think that part's still the same. Not like GoB cares about his size, right?

I think it was the same in the VN. Gil does that to him at the Einzbern forest.

So was Gil corrupted by the grail and become a bit insane even if it doesn't really show it?

Compared to F/Z Gil, he still throws the King act around, but I never saw F/Z Gil as the genocide humans for the hell of it kind of guy even if he's full of himself.
And doing this kind of breaks his promise to F/Z Rider as well. I know F/Z is the prequel, but still, I think the difference is on purpose.

While he never said anything about genocide, he did show a lot displeasure to the modern world. Grail corrupting him and bringing realization to his darkest wishes might be the case here. Even if he doesn't realize it, the grail definitely did something to him.

Wasn't that supposed to be the point of the fight, since Archer (despite his weakened state) is supposed to be better than Shirou in a fight?

Gil wasn't too far from this belief even in FZ. Mind you that he had 10 long years to develop even more displeasure towards the modern world (a world where heroes like him are not as necessary and the world that does not welcome the old-fashioned kind of rulers... andh e truly does not seem to have earned any place in the current society). Sometimes, characters develop off-screen.

That final scene with Shinji looked pretty disturbing. Makes you happy Lancer didn't kill him so he can suffer more.

That's not Shirou's version of reality marble. Reality Marbles are not something that is "normal" the World sees, so when you open one the world is always trying to break it from outside. You need to continuously channel mana into the reality marble to counter the World's effort in breaking your marble. In addition, magicians like Shirou have magic circuits that repel other people's magic and he is also repelling Archer's Unlimited Blade Works from inside.

Trivia:

Magic circuits of a magician does not only make magical energy, but it can also repel external magical energy. That's why every magician in the F/SN are always using some kind of physical weapon with their magic integrated in it instead of screaming "Avada Kadavra!" all the time. Physical impacts work on everyone. People bleed if they are cut.

Yeah, the Shirou vs Archer was meh from animation standpoint.
It was supposed to be much more intense while also going with all these philosophies and flashbacks.
On the other hand facial expressions and everything was pretty well made.
Shirou's determination was seen clearly through the screen.
In a few parts it was even better than the original.

Speaking of which, wow, they somehow managed to make UBW Gil a more legit villain here. And it was done by nothing but the execution of the scenes.
Seriously, Gil in the original VN is closer to just an arrogant douche here.
In this anime he has a much more bone-chilling air surrounding him.

I think this all but confirms the idea that Archer's final appearance in this route is a result of the counter force as many fans suspected .

Don't give him any more ideas, and especially don't let him watch gundam.

It's actually a contradiction with canon because both the VN and interviews said that Arhcer's brown skin and white hair comes from him overstraining himself with Projection and also messing up quite a few times.
That and being a lot in Africa or the Middle East, you know places where the most trouble might be brewing.
