Yowamushi Pedal
2013's combined 4th/5th issue of Akita Shoten's Weekly Shōnen Champion magazine is announcing on Thursday that a television anime adaptation of Wataru Watanabe's Yowamushi Pedal manga has been green-lit for next year. Source The story centers around Sakamichi Onoda, a high school otaku who loves figures from anime and games so much that he would ride his commuter bicycle to and from Tokyo's Akihabara shopping district in a 90-kilometer (about 60-mile) round trip over steep slopes. Onoda ends up joining the competitive sport of bicycle racing.

It initially grabbed my interest because it looks different from the vast majority of anime these days, and the fact that about 95% of the new series announcements over the last few months have been depressingly formulaic and predictable. After reading some of the manga, I can confirm that is's excellent, which only raises my hopes higher.

Agreed. ^^ Well ... maybe I will try a few eps in honor of your finally persuading me to check out the 2011 remake of hunter x hunter (which is really excellent so far btw).

As a cyclist I'm really looking forward to this anime. I picked up the manga and it's really entertaining. The attention to bike components and gear is excellent (such as torn pant leg from riding due to no chainring guard typically on road bikes). If your typical High School sports series bores you, this one should surprise you. (Maybe it will encourage more cyclist too!)

Oh my goat, a show about the great sport of cycling! Tremendous. Considering how the Japanese like their sports anime, cycling didn't get enough of the exposure the anime gives to other sports. I remember watching a OVA some time ago about bicycling and it was intense. Pity I don't remember the name anymore. Anyway, really glad this sport is getting an anime adaptation.

I sure haven't. Will certainly check it out! Btw, I found the name of the OVA after googling and it was called Nasu: Suitcase no Wataridori. It was a fantastic watch.
Anyway, looking forward to this one.
