For anime or for TV in general?

Something like Hulu (for tv) or Crunchyroll (for anime)? or Netflix (TV and movies)?

Niconico streams some anime series at some times, though I am not really sure how it works compared to CR.

Then again, why would they - when they have TV networks broadcasting the stuff? At least, I'm assuming they do.

Subscription based? Don't think so. Most sites in Japan are PPV based systems. (bandai-ch, showgate, niconico, gyao, psn, etc)

They do but the Japanese TV system is station-based, and many shows simply aren't shown in parts of the country. (Though the satellite channel AT-X helps.)

Bandai's experimenting with a subscription system now, but I think they're the only one.

Niconico streams quite a lot of anime, but not simulcast in Japan.

They usually stream the shows 3 days to 1 week after broadcast, and each episode is free for 1 week. Some shows are much later, a month or two delayed. They also "broadcast" a couple of older anime series 1 episode a week, too.

You can pay money to watch older episodes, although they often will show entire series on nama-housou (live broadcast) specials.

Like, they marathoned all of madoka a while ago and got a ton of viewers.

Each season niconico is getting 12-15 shows.

Interesting! But it's only 1 hour before TV broadcast, not effectively much different from a simulcast.

Aha, looking at the TV stations is actually airs on, this isn't so surprising: The first TV station is actually Chiba TV, a small local station east of tokyo.

It's not airing on any of the big TV stations (just on a network of local stations), which makes sense why niconico could get the first airing rights.

The problem is that even if you are a premium member, you still can't watch some anime that are "not available in your region" on niconico.

Yeah premium is just for misc utility functions, like full screen, post-broadcast live stream time-shifting, avoiding economy mode, and not being kicked out of live streams when premium members fill it up. Doesn't have anything to do with specific content (e.g. the anime back catalog costs the same to rent regardless of whether you're a premium member or not).

I got an account at japanvpn.com for avoiding territory restrictions.
