I wish Kaoru hadn't mentioned the "B" word, because I couldn't help thinking of that pretentious twaddle of a series while watching this and honestly, I'm not sure it would have reminded me of it all that much if the seed hadn't been planted in my head... Yet, I did still enjoy it. ED was excellent and as usual for SHAFT, it looked interesting when the weren't so busy reminding us how SHAFT-y they were. Loved the character designs and ED, and of course Miyu Irino is stellar as the lead. But Ai Nonoka was a bit distracting I must admit - she sounded more Fuuko than Fuuko!

That aunt is supposed to be even more moe than Erio. Thus, expected.

Well, he could have done both! But thankfully, I think Takuya Eguchi has done a decent job pinch-hitting.

Blog post for the premiere.

SHAFT loves dialogue. This is perfect for them. I liked the first episode and it seems very promising.

Weird how I instantly recognized that Meme is voiced by Ai Nonaka aka Kyouko/Fuuko! Everytime Meme spoke I couldn't help but imagine Kyouko in her place, showing off her trademark fang

Anyways, that was a really weird, but fun first episode. I'm really loving the art and the animation was pretty good too.

I feel like the dialogue in Bakemonogatari was more focused though [I can't think of the right word for it]. That scene was nothing was quick non sequiturs followed by Makoto trying to repeat the same thing over and over [about how he doesn't "beat around the bush", regardless of the fact that he was beating around the bush], and it got to the point where the show basically stopped moving and was repeating the same thing until Erio kicked Makoto.

It's not as if I don't like dialogue. I loved Bakemonogatari and Katanagatari, Erio is interesting to listen to, and Makoto has nice monologues. I just don't feel like the dialogue in that scene was engaging or even particularly witty.

Lol. You mean the best show of 2009? Maybe the fact that I didn't notice any pretentiousness in it allowed me to like it as much as I do. In fact, maybe I didn't take it seriously enough to suspect pretentiousness.

But I was not making any general comparison between this show and that, just the basic situation of not-too-useless protagonist meets extremely bizarre girl. However, having watched this (and enjoyed it) a second time, perhaps I begin to see more similarities....

This show didn't seem very Shafty to me, however. Not as many odd angles or strange shots as B or even MadoMagi. Two or three trademark "head nearly leaving the frame but twisting back to look at you" shots, however.

I'm also baffled at some posters not liking the dialogue in this show. Loved it, myself. Not wonderful wonderful (like some of Bakemonogatari), but enjoyable and interesting.

Meme is... Excellen Browning? Sorry, just finished SRW recently and her voice is still inside my head.

The OP... I think Erio is trying to brainwash us Earthlings. Seriously, I feel like my brain is short-circuiting listening to that song.

Weird episode but I'll keep watching for now.

I just read a couple of scene of the first episode in the light novel and it seems that they changed a few things here and there. The best scene in the episode is actually not in the light novel I believe.

Very appealing animation. As for the content... Eh. Perhaps I'm not weird enough to appreciate it. (That and I'm very critical of shows that attempt to be humorous. This just doesn't hit the spot for me.) Erio's design is very pretty, though. Anatomy is well-drawn in this show (I don't know what it is, but her thighs are DELICIOUS-looking). I wish I could look that good after being in bed all day, lol.

Awful OP that was ALMOST catchy, but just annoying overall. The ED isn't even the least bit memorable, but it's considerably better than the OP.

It was more of fansub translation problem, I think. There were way too much 2ch/otaku words/parody going on here and there (like 'you can call me Jojo'. Not sure of dinner scene, but there were definitely some parodies I can notice). When it was far inferior to Nisioisin's witty dialogues, Shaft did deliver the conversation properly, at least for me. I liked it.

Of course, it is mere preference after all.

Ah, if that's the case, I can appreciate that I wasn't the intended audience for that scene, rather than that scene being bad. Thanks for the explanation.

That scene with Erio eating the pizza reminded me of a Like Like from the Legend of Zelda.

Now that you've opened the topic on Erio's bizarre eating methods, HOW THE HECK IS SHE ABLE TO EAT PIZZA LIKE THAT?! It's like she's really an alien.

I'm just concerned most about the Aunt's attitude towards the daughter. That's about as much as of child neglect abuse as you can get.

Hopefully it's explained later in a rational and acceptable manner.

This was ... a bit weird... but also quite cute I guess. However, the OP was ear-bleedingly horrible and the ED wasn't much better either. Whilst the content and atmosphere didn't seem particularily SHAFT-like, it felt very SHAFT-like due to the camera angles, camera pans - basically anything to do with shot positioning and camera usage.

EDIT:
