I wish Kaoru hadn't mentioned the "B" word, because I couldn't help thinking of that pretentious twaddle of a series while watching this and honestly, I'm not sure it would have reminded me of it all that much if the seed hadn't been planted in my head... Yet, I did still enjoy it. ED was excellent and as usual for SHAFT, it looked interesting when the weren't so busy reminding us how SHAFT-y they were. Loved the character designs and ED, and of course Miyu Irino is stellar as the lead. But Ai Nonoka was a bit distracting I must admit - she sounded more Fuuko than Fuuko!

Bakemonogatari was exactly like that though, half of episode with infinitely useless dialogues. Same in Denpa Onna.

Weird how I instantly recognized that Meme is voiced by Ai Nonaka aka Kyouko/Fuuko! Everytime Meme spoke I couldn't help but imagine Kyouko in her place, showing off her trademark fang
Anyways, that was a really weird, but fun first episode. I'm really loving the art and the animation was pretty good too.

It's not as if I don't like dialogue. I loved Bakemonogatari and Katanagatari, Erio is interesting to listen to, and Makoto has nice monologues. I just don't feel like the dialogue in that scene was engaging or even particularly witty. |

But I was not making any general comparison between this show and that, just the basic situation of not-too-useless protagonist meets extremely bizarre girl. However, having watched this (and enjoyed it) a second time, perhaps I begin to see more similarities.... This show didn't seem very Shafty to me, however. Not as many odd angles or strange shots as B or even MadoMagi. Two or three trademark "head nearly leaving the frame but twisting back to look at you" shots, however. I'm also baffled at some posters not liking the dialogue in this show. Loved it, myself. Not wonderful wonderful (like some of Bakemonogatari), but enjoyable and interesting.

Meme is... Excellen Browning? Sorry, just finished SRW recently and her voice is still inside my head.
The OP... I think Erio is trying to brainwash us Earthlings. Seriously, I feel like my brain is short-circuiting listening to that song. Weird episode but I'll keep watching for now. |

Very appealing animation. As for the content... Eh. Perhaps I'm not weird enough to appreciate it. (That and I'm very critical of shows that attempt to be humorous. This just doesn't hit the spot for me.) Erio's design is very pretty, though. Anatomy is well-drawn in this show (I don't know what it is, but her thighs are DELICIOUS-looking). I wish I could look that good after being in bed all day, lol.
Awful OP that was ALMOST catchy, but just annoying overall. The ED isn't even the least bit memorable, but it's considerably better than the OP.

Of course, it is mere preference after all.

That scene with Erio eating the pizza reminded me of a Like Like from the Legend of Zelda. |

This was ... a bit weird... but also quite cute I guess. However, the OP was ear-bleedingly horrible and the ED wasn't much better either. Whilst the content and atmosphere didn't seem particularily SHAFT-like, it felt very SHAFT-like due to the camera angles, camera pans - basically anything to do with shot positioning and camera usage.
EDIT: This was what I was trying to explain. Guess the saying that a picture is worth a thousand words comes into play here. |
