『Did you know the final lines during the day of the recording?』
Q: How did it feel to find out about the ending?
Endo: The script hasn't gone up to include the final line yet. I was wondering when I would get to know, and I was pretty nervous then (laughs). Also, when I received the script, I only got my part. All three of us received different scripts, you know.
Nakajima: When I saw that I only received my own lines, I was pretty nervous….. because I saw a few things that I was pretty concerned over
Endo: Did it have anything to do with me?
Nakajima: Yes, it did!
Endo: Ah, I want to see it soon (p.s.: this journal/interview was done before the movie was finished, which means that before the premiere, all three of them also didn't know about the others' lines) There are parts I don't know about, it's really frustrating (laughs)
Nakamura: In fact, all the other cast are also ignorant of the ending (but of course Nakamura knows about the other cast member's lines)
Nakajima: It was a great surprise, huh.
Nakamura: Although it wasn't really a bad, as in tragic, ending, it was pretty sly.....
Endo: Are you talking about Alto?
Nakamura: No, I was referring to Producer Kawamori (laughs). He said that the happy parts are all up to the audience's imagination….so I guess if we're talking about story direction, anything is fine?
Endo: No matter whose point of view we're talking about, it's still the same. Because I'm no longer just seeing things from Sheryl's point of view, I'm also starting to understand Alto's and Ranka's feelings. And thought a lot about how I would feel about this if I were to be the audience. I can no longer look at this objectively now (laughs). Probably, right till the last song, I'll still be changing my thoughts about this.
Nakajima: Even after recoding the voice, we'd still run into problems with the schedule and ended up recording it under a very tight situation. At that time, I wasn't even told about what kind of song the ending would be…
Endo: It just feels like it'll always go on, doesn't it? Like it isn't really the end yet.
Nakajima: Yes, I feel like shouting out "To Be Continued"! So even though we say it's the end, it doesn't really feel real to me yet….
Endo: After finishing the recording, I would still find myself ruminating over the lines of the script. It doesn't mean if it's sad or good, but it was great to see the three of them and their lives
Nakajima: When it all ended, I couldn't stop my tears…. the next day was a vacation, and I cried for an entire day. It wasn't like separating myself from Ranka, it was more like my entire being was being torn apart…even now the pain is still there. I think it's because I find it hard to accept the ending, so my heart still feels for it.
Nakamura: I already got rid of it and forgot all about it the next day
Nakajima: Huh?
Endo: I guess it's because of being liberated from those two women (meaning Sheryl and Ranka)..that kind of atmosphere (laugh)
Nakamura: Well, it's been three years and more, so it doesn't feel like "oh today is the end!" or something like that feeling. During the end of the Portland Hotel "Macross Super LIVE", Miss Kanno Yoko said "Thank you for all the hard work."….it did feel like the end. Like it was going to be the last time everybody got together. But of course, Alto or Sheryl, Ranka, their characters will still be around in the future. (Even though the love triangle has a closure, it wouldn't be too odd to see somebody else popping up in another series, like the one where we saw characters reappearing in "Macross the Ride") But, big promotional activities like that were definitely not going to happen anymore. When I went to the cinema to watch the final, perhaps I'll finally start to get the feeling that "Ah, it's really the end".
『The last scene was only revealed to the three main leads on the day of the recording?!』
Actually this was only the ending scene without any words to it. Before, the staff and cast had to record without knowing anything about it. On the day of the recording, after finishing editing the scene only did the recording staff and the leads receive copies of the script for the last scene.
