I'm just wondering if Freeman can top Sugita's growling in the 7th E8...

If you have Soul Calibur 3 or 4, go the profile for Siegfried and listen to his grunts and growls and you'll have a pretty good idea. And then for laughs, go to Xianqua and you can hear "Haruhi" make some interesting noises.

Fully aware of the latter. English language Xianghua is essentially "Chinese Haruhi with a sword."

However, Freeman's Siegfried isn't really a good indication of what Kyon would sound like...

... But since we're on the subject of English Haruhi/SC voices... Kimidori is Talim. Kinda want to make a joke about that at some point.

His lines might be different sounding, but I think his grunts and growls would be a good indication

The voice is entirely different. It'd be like using Haruko from FLCL to judge how Kari Wahlgren's Tsuruya would sound in a similar situation.

Dub Tsuruya would be 500 times better if she sounded like Haruko.

That she would. Instead, we got Anemone/Diva.

I always thought Wahlgren's Tsuruya did sound a lot like her Haruko. Granted, it's the more manic Haruko, not the awesome laid-back Haruko, but still the same voice, more or less... Go back and listen especially to her lines (and EPIC laugh) in the movie episode.

FLCL really was a pantheon-level dub, wasn't it? Right up there with Bebop and Trigun...

It was the first non-4kids anime I ever watched.

I'm so glad I did, too.

And I don't think Wahlgren's Tsuruya sounded anything like Haruko except for the laugh, sadly.

Wahlgren's Tsuruya sounded like a Valley Girl. I don't see why they gave her that voice in the first place...

I watched FLCL subs once, I couldn't stand the original voice for Haruka, Kari does it way better. Her Kagami is awesome too.

Freeman has pretty good range.

Ever hear him as Straight Cougar in s-CRY-ed?

Or as Albedo in Xenosaga?

Or as Holland Novak in Eureka 7?

After you've heard him in about six or more of his many roles, his voice does start to become instantly recognizable... but he can do great villainy (Albedo), harsh bosses (Holland), and really over-the-top zany heroes (Straight Cougar). Same voice, but way different voice inflections and the like. I'm inclined to think that the Kyon growl isn't too much for him...

Implying '>' means 'will be greater than,' I say yes. The only really hard part about watching all eight episodes for me was reading the subtitles. I think hearing it in a language you understand will make watching it easier, plus you can focus more on the actual episodes (animation, music, whatever). Bandai's subs will only make reading it worse...

And if most people think that way, a sub-only release of the new episodes will be bad.
I agree on the dub vs. sub debate here. You can follow your own language spoken much more casually than you can read your language wrote on screen. The dub, in theory, should be more tolerable than subbed Endless Eight.

Mind you, the chances of me buying all the English dub DVDs for Endless Eight are... highly unlikely. I'll probably get whichever DVD the finale episode falls in, though.

Out of curiosity, why do you think that the Bandai's sub work will be worse than the fan-subs?

I don't like how Bandai does their subs (the yellow coloring mostly).

Yeah, yellow coloring for subs is a bad idea, I agree with you there.

It seems to me almost every commerially produced anime uses those yellow subs, and I don't think it's limited to just anime, but most foreign works

Save up enough money to get them all, then. I expect we'll see a 5-5-4 release schedule in the States.

Seeing as I referenced Wahlgren's role in that series in a later post... No.

The thing is, Kyon is such an atypical role for Freeman. It's hard to picture what he'd sound like.

Of course, I'm still going to laugh at whatever the dub does with "*Kyon growls into the phone* .. *Mikuru starts crying*," whether it's because they did it better or because it's horrible.

Er... it's not a financial issue, it's a question of whether or not I want to reward this arc by buying all the DVDs.

If your breakdown is accurate I'll probably get DVD 2 and 3... and skip DVD 1.

Or I might just wait for the full season set to come out.
