Arrow Of Pain & Relief. A Tale Of Wisdom (Teeth).

After procrastinating for a long time (say... more than a year or so ) I finally paid a visit to the dentist to extract my upper-right wisdom tooth. This would not be my first wisdom tooth extraction, and indeed, if the first one was any indication, I was having a lot of apprehension for this one.

So it was to my pleasant surprise that I was not really suffering at all this time. After some analysis, I came up with the following points.
  • My first extraction involved BOTH the upper-left AND lower-left wisdom tooth. The exclusion of a lower extraction in my second visit is especially important as the lower gum is constantly exposed to various substances such as the food you need to eat and stuff.

    Gravity, we meet again.
    .
  • My first extraction was under an Army Dentist. This in itself was not a problem as my friend, the assistant, assured me that he was a Specialist. What it did mean though, was a lack of painkillers.

Oh sure... I got some jabs to help numb the pain, and at that time, I thought it was par for the course, but when I went for my second extraction at a Private Dentist this time, I finally realised just how inadequate the first visit was. The good Private Dentist quite literally not just jabbed my gums numb, but liberally sprayed more anaesthesia all over inside my mouth cavity. To the point where I could not even feel with my tongue.

Then there was the matter of the pills. The Army Dentist gave me three painkiller pills which were only sufficient for one day. After which, I was more or less expected to suck it up. This meant of course, that my second day was pure agonising HELL.

The Private Dentist on the other hand, gave me enough pills for four days; and best of all, at no extra charge.
    .
  • Extraction of upper wisdom teeth cost S$80 each, while extraction of the lower ones cost S$450 each. Yes, I know. Big honking difference, but there is the matter of risk too, since there is danger of nerve damage in lower extraction.
    .
  • I can only pray at this point that my lower-right wisdom tooth will NEVER, EVER come out. S$450 can buy a LOT of stuff.
How about you? What was your wisdom tooth/teeth extraction(s) like?

Cheers.

That sounded terrible! O__o;; I don't remember how much it cost to extract my teeth because insurance ended up paying for a large chunk of it.

Truthfully, I don't remember what happened as the doctor (my dentist doesn't do wisdom teeth - he referred me to a private clinic) extracted my teeth - I had an IV sticking in my arm and had blacked out after oh, say a minute of repeatedly telling myself, "this is never going to work, I'm not even tired, not even tired, not even tired, not even--" [CONK]

The next thing I knew, I was lying in a chair-bed thing with a cloth over me, so naturally I thought I'd died. I sat up and began asking people what had happened. Little did I know that they couldn't understand a blasted word out of my mouth; there were a dozen gauze pads shoved in my cheeks that I couldn't feel and blood spurting out every time I exhaled. Needless to say, the people looked a little freaked out.

I lived off of watery rice (breakfast, lunch, dinner) and cottage cheese (dessert) for the next few days.

Friends who have told me that they had their teeth yanked out said that they were gassed instead of stuck with a needle; I'm the only one I know who had an IV needle, and Skane, you're the only one I know who was actually conscious throughout the procedure. (Perhaps that's the way they do it in S'pore. I know they used to do that "back in the day" here in U.S.A., but I assumed that was old and it was no longer done that way.) O_o

The way you described sounds similar to how the dentist pulled out my teeth in front (have no idea what they're called, they were just making it crowded). He stuck me with five needles, one for each region of my mouth (one didn't work... haha, very funny, Life. Being stuck in the gums with needles *HURTS*). I couldn't feel my lips or tongue -- the only way I knew the dentist was actually yanking teeth out were the sounds of "snap crackle and pop" echoing throughout my entire head. I didn't even feel the blood pouring down my face until it reached my neck.

Those were pretty painless compared to the wisdom teeth, though. I healed in a day or two as opposed to nearly a week for the wisdom teeth.

I had all 4 of them extracted at once, with local anaesthesia. And while it was a bit creepy when they couldn't get one of them out properly and had to do some sawing in my mouth, it still was more of an interesting experience than it was a painful one. I didn't get any painkillers afterwards either but it didn't hurt all that much. One and a half day after the operation I was all back on my feet.

My wisdom teeth will never come entirely out (maybe just a little bit). My dentist told me this is because of the strange direction they are growing... imagine them to grow quite horizontally against the other teeth instead of vertically. Now the dentist was not sure if I will ever have complications with these wisdom teeth. It basically depends on their willingness to grow further or stay as they are. Of course I hope for the latter one.

Ah, that was happening with mine, too. When I looked at the x-ray it was apparent that my wisdom teeth were coming out on their sides and pushing the other teeth out of the way.. D:

My bottom wisdom teeth are like that.

I had one of the top wisdom teeth pulled because it had a huge cavity. Dentists have recommended I have all of them pulled, though I haven't had it done yet. I was a bit surprised that it took me a few days to be back at 100% after that. It's amazing how having one little tooth pulled can have such an effect. Didn't take any painkillers besides asprin though, and not even much of that. Medication tends to have weird effects on me, so I try to avoid it if at all possible.

My first wisdom tooth (upper left) is coming out right now. It's been coming out for some months now, and it's doing it in spurts. After a couple of weeks without a drop of pain, the little bugger is back, digging through my gums like there's no tomorrow. It's been a small hell these days, specially when I wake up.

The worst thing about my ordeal was the disgusting taste in my mouth every morning after having blood coagulate on my tongue for 8 hours. I could not get the taste out of my mouth and my gums would just not stop bleeding... I think I bled for 2 weeks. Ever since I have been overly conscious of how my mouth "tastes" and need to brush my teeth right away after waking up.

Gross story time!

So I got three of my wisdom teeth out because they were coming in wrong (one came in just fine). It hurt a lot and I was down for the count for several days, and after that I still had to take painkillers for another week or two. Thank god for Valum and extra strong doses of ibuprophen.

Anyways while my gum was healing there were little pockets where the teeth used to be. I was supposed to clean these with a big syringe that I'd fill up with salt water and spray the pockets. However one of the pockets was angled funny. I thought I had been cleaning it though. A couple of weeks after the surgery I go to the dentist and I complain that one pocket is kind of hard to clean. So the teeth cleaning lady takes her high powered air blaster and gives the pocket a good blast and... out comes a weeks worth of small food bits.

Needless to say she helped me figure out how to clean that pocket better right quick.

I honestly can't imagine why ANYONE would want to go through getting a wisdom tooth out more than once. Why not just get them all done with at the same time? That's what I did and I'm just glad to never have to do it again. I guess people think it's more painful and a harder recovery to get more than one done, and maybe that's true, but at least you only have to do it once.

I think the worst part for me was waking up from the surgery. My mouth hurt like crazy and there was a ton of blood and I was really confused. I started crying and didn't even know why and I kept trying to say things that didn't make sense. But once I'd been awake for about an hour my mind cleared and it was ok. I looked like a chipmunk for about a week and the painkillers knocked me out for hours every time I took one since I'm small, but other than that it wasn't too bad.

I got all four yanked out at once.

Stayed awake throughout -- they put some local anesthetic on my teeth, then injected more anesthetic directly into my gums.

It felt...a little weird, and I could feel slight pressure -- but the sound of bamboo cracking haunted me for quite some time.

Used the painkillers for a day, then decided to tough it out. Didn't want to risk getting addicted.

the chances of you getting addicted to the pain pills are very slim. the ones that get addicted are poping 20 pills a day.

when i got mine removed they gave me vicodin for the bad pain. but i never used it, always just used advil or something over the counter.

I have four wisdom teeth and also have a dental condition called 'open bite' from years of playing brass. The front row of my upper teeth cannot meet the front row of my lower set of teeth. Yeah, it makes eating stuff like fillet extremely hard; sometimes impossible.. My parents wanted to get it fixed -- I'm fine with it -- and the dentist wanted to take out ALL my wisdom teeth. WTFBBQ. I refused for a variety of reasons.

After reading the opening post I don't think I want to go through that

My experience really wasn't too bad. Just the nasty taste of blood like I posted ^^. It didn't hurt much, just a bit uncomfortable trying to fall asleep the first couple nights. I think I had all four removed at once (maybe it was two... but I'm pretty sure it was 4 - my gums feel a bit deformed back there on the bottom as well as the top ^^). I had them knock me out though. No way was I going to be awake through that.

Worst part about getting my wisdom teeth removed.... It cost me 1500 bucks.

The process itself wasn't bad though, because they knocked me out for it. I remember waking up being a little out of it and as they were wheeling me out the door I said "wait I want my teeth!"

The pain afterwards wasn't that bad either, it just sucked trying to keep food out of the holes.
