Through in honesty, I think the writer just trying to set up a love triangle for jealousy conflict latter down. Emilia certainly sharp enough that she catch onto Rems feelings for Subaru sooner or latter, and then his misery will take on whole new form!

...So, after Episode 18, I have definitively positive that Rem is best girl of the series. I liked how descriptive and vivid her thoughts were on Subaru, and how she intends to support him no matter what.

Thats what exactly make her character good. She knew along about Subaru's feelings moreover knew that self-scarificing side of him that he often showed Emilia, that saved herself, would be lost if he indulgened in his weakness now. Because Subaru really wasn't runaway to be with her, he was running away from facing his problems biggest being his screwup Emilia.

Ram called him out on this too in ep 17, but in a harsher manner.

Some people seem to be mad at Subaru rejecting Rem. I think though, that Rem is quite happy about Subaru's feelings since she didn't realize how much he treasured her. Sure she was crying when he rejected her but she was crying waaaaaaaay before that as well.

I think Rem's character goes beyond being the "best girl". The fact that she handled that rejection so maturely is praiseworthy alone.

They're "losers".

Both look down on themselves but once they met one wouldn't allow the other to do that anymore, they're not licking the other's wounds, they telling the other to get their shit together because from their pov they know their virtues are more than their defects.

Maybe you guys are right. I just looked up Re:Zero's author (Tappei Nagatsuki) on MAL. In the picture of him, he makes a facial expression hilariously similar to the famous troll meme.

Anyway, Rem truly is an amazing heroine.
