The story is set in the distant future. The land is ruined, and humanity establishes the mobile fort city Plantation. Pilots produced inside Plantation live in Mistilteinn, also know as the "birdcage." Children live there knowing nothing of the outside world or the freedom of the sky. Their lives consist of battling to carry out missions. Their enemies are mysterious giant lifeforms known as Kyōryū, and the children pilot robots called Franxx to face off against them. For the children, riding the Franxx proves their existence. A boy named Hiro is called Code:016, and he was once known as a prodigy. However, he has fallen behind, and his existence seems unnecessary. Not piloting a Franxx is the same as ceasing to exist. One day, a mysterious girl known as "Zero Two" appears before him. Two horns grow out of her head.

Can anyone explain to me why this manga is more explicit than the original anime it was based on? Don't IP holders get to dictate the age rating of a franchise across its media forms? The anime isn't as explicit as the manga, unless things change for the anime series' release on hardcopy.

Even he has to toe the line drawn by his superiors, or else why would he hide explicit details in the ways he does? I don't know why he was given permission to hide less details than the original anime is willing to show.

Close, but not quite. Zero Two is more similar to Lala in terms of character design, especially since both characters share the same Japanese voice actress. Nemesis was quite the tease as well, so you could say that Zero Two has some of Nemesis' personality traits, aside from the whole obsession with her darling.

True, at first 02's bust size is not as melonish as Lala but then again, i reconsider it that she may have the same melon as Lala. She maybe have the same appearance as Lala but what interest me is her personality that was more closer to Nemesis.

Nah, 02 is the mixture of Lala and Nemesis.

Hiro is consist of Rito for character and personality of maybe Yami.

Ichigo is like Haruna with personality of maybe Rin.

Still try to investigate other characters though but i think Yabuki has some mixture characters from TLR at Franxx.

Even if it's the same series, the two medium don't need to have the same age rating. They obviously chose Yabuki knowing full well what he would do, and probably even encouraged him so the manga would sell more (and it's working).

Mayoi Neko Overrun, another manga adaptation done by Yabuki, also had nipples despite the LN and anime not having any.

Funny you mention Mayoi Neko Overrun. I know of another LN series, Strike the Blood, whose anime adaptation was actually more explicit, not less, in its fanservice than either the original LN or the manga adaptation were.

There are still lines to toe though. For instance, unless an 18+ anime series was based on 18+ source, you won't get an 18+ version of that anime. For that matter, I don't think the producers of anime series will allow official 18+ merchandise or even merchandise that is more explicit than the original's rating, such as figures with removable clothes, to be officially sold either.

Speaking of Yabuki, he's already famous now for the fanservice he put in the various To Love-Ru series, so while a lot of other artists who make 18+ materials could have drawn for the DitF manga if fanservice was the only requirement, I suspect that Yabuki's "brand name recognition" was the deciding element (plus how similar Lala and Haruna from TLR look design-wise to Zero Two and Ichigo from DitF). I don't remember him ever drawing for a mecha series before, so he probably has assistants drawing the mecha for him.

However, if the DitF anime producers know that fanservice (especially on BD releases) can increase sales, then I don't know why they didn't put it in DitF in the first place. Maybe they were going for the teen demographic? Or maybe they couldn't air it on AT-X (a channel known for airing uncensored anime series) in Japan?

in the manga there are nipples, but just that, the manga could not have a more mature mood than the anime, having nipples does not do something better, if not Trash (manga) would be nice.

Yep, Yabuki's reputation was definitely a factor in their decision. I believe he stated Lala and Zero Two looking so similar and sharing the same voice actress was just a coincidence, but whatever the case, I think it helped draw in the To Love-ru fanbase.

As for why the anime doesn't have nipples, your guess is as good as mine. I actually have no clue how anime BDs are rated in Japan. Maybe there are different regulations for manga and anime, with manga being able to get away with more stuff. Or maybe it's just a creative decision.

Show on the TV will not show nipple , but blue ray disk edition on the other hand ....

I mean , what is the point of buying blueray disk edition if they already show everything on TV show .

Who did that? It's true most of us are reading the manga because Yabuki is doing it, but nobody ever said the manga was better simply because it has nipples. Nobody even said the manga was better. Mazryonh wondered why the manga was so much more explicit than the anime and we're simply discussing that. That's it.

And what's wrong with what you said anyway? People can enjoy widely different shows for different reasons. I can pick up and enjoy shows for their stories, or their superior production values, or their characters, or their comedy, or their setting, or their fights, etc... and sometimes, I can pick up a show because I want to see some boobs.
