You can try:

Last Exile
Kenshin
Full Moon Wo Sagashite
Full Metal Alchemist
Chrno Crusade

Even though Chrno Crusade had just started off with episode 1, it looks pretty promising so far. For the first two series, they are quite good. But since they are already licensed, I suggest that you buy the DVDs.

Another show that had a extremely and complicated story is Berserk, however the story doesn't finish, manga is still on going. Scrapped Princess is very good. Kimi ga Nozomu Eien for a romance has a very intriguing story and is very tragic. Now, Then, Here and There is another great story anime. Last Exile just blew me away. Loved it from the first episode to the last, not one episode was bad imo. X tv is another very good story anime. Definitely can't forget Wolf's Rain(dvd's will be out soon). There are more but, i need to think a bit longer, these came off the top of my head.

PeaceMaker Kurogane bears much promise as a historical fiction which should hit major real history points as some of its prime side characters are real life important characters from history.

Further more, I'm so happy! I found a reference online from someone who was looking up historical accuracy and backreferences other sites that apparently show that the Ichimura brothers (Tetsunosuke Ichimura is the main char) were in the Shinsengumi registry and that Tetsunosuke, though about all they know about him, really was Hijikata's page. Yeee!

Other good storylines:

Escaflowne, Soul Hunter (at first this didn't seem to fit my bill for the type of anime I liked, but actually, it develops very nicely), E's Otherwise, Read or Die (Dream) the TV series...complicated but interesting,

Condor Heroes :The anime, I admit has some slow bad points, but I'm sure it will get better. I've seen one of the older live action versions of this Chinese fantasy Tolkien like novel, and it has a very good, very drawing storyline...and even if you decide the style is not right for you, the opening and ending music is well worth listening to.

Anime Movie with an interesting storyline: Firetripper
