I've been waiting for this series since the OVAs!

Excellent first episode. I think the OP song really fit the series but I do agree with another poster that they could have done better with the OP sequences. Would have been great if they put in more effort on that part.

Chibi Elias scenes were cute.

The seiyuus for Elias and, especially Chise, I find, really nailed their roles.

Totally looking forward to watching the rest of this!!! Already in my best list for this season.

Elias is such a smooth skullbastard. Proposing under the moonlight in a magical forest while carrying his future wife home. <3
Aww, the first episode was as beautiful as the OVA. I hope all episodes can keep that beauty up. <3

I didn't finish the OAV. I got a little bored. But enjoyed the first ep thoroughly. Elias is smooth and I like the perfect scene under the moonlight where he proposed while carrying his future wife. I also like the fact that they included that scene before ending the ep. Best of season so far.

Just finished episode and it was all I could have wanted from it and more. Extremely captivating all the way through and it nailed the mood of manga so well. The OP is already one of the best of year (if not the best) while it ED itself is pretty strong. While not quite to level of OVAs the animation is very good and considering the studio behind it I have little worry it won't be consistent for the most part.

Anyway, great start. Just as good as the OVAs.
Yeah, I'll just say you're supposed to find his attitude towards Chise odd if not a little contradictory for reasons you will understand later.

if this get a dub (which I think it will), will we get a British voice actor for our skeletal mage?

because I can only imagine him with that accent

Fun first episode. Didn't think there would be some humor element as well.

Can/should I watch the OVA episodes now that I've seen episode one of the series? I'd like to avoid spoilers if there are any.

I think you're fine. There's some inferred information there, but if anything I think knowing more about Chise's background enriches the manga experience that the anime is going to depict.

First ep was really great, BTW. But those of us who saw the first three in the theatre knew that (and know it only gets better from here).

There's a major character important to Chise shown in the first OVA who won't appear for an episode or two of the actual series yet.

Spoiler:

Yeah, but I don't really consider that a spoiler. It's not like it's all explained away - it's more a teaser.

My sense was that the OVA was (wisely) written to as not to spoil the TV anime (and by inference, the manga). And I think it did that job very well.

Yo chise is cute but how does she even compete with chibi Elias.

Great first ep as expected

I'm really not much into demi-humans, especially when they really don't look anything like a human. Maybe it's because Beauty and Beast didn't really jive with me as a a kid (and the LA one I only watched because Hermione is in it), but I honestly couldn't get into this one. Hopefully they pick up in the next 2 episodes.

Pretty interesting things. One would normally think that shady magician that buys a slave would be into the generic kind of slaving bad treatment and disrespect, but this is in a oddly paternalistic but just as creepy way. It's like he bought a really expensive pet and most likely trying to groom her into doing something.

PV (the latest one) was super misleading, this seems much more laid back in its pacing and not action driven but still found it very interesting to watch. OP is really nice (especially the music) ED is just there. Visuals are super crisp and has some nice moments of animation, not a ton but looks like WIT will deliver when required.

One thing that I felt was that the OVAs formed me the wrong idea of the Chise-Elias relationship being much more on even terms, and Elias being just some sort of adoptive father to her. The "bride" thing wasn't even mentioned and I thought it was just meant in some alchemical/magical sense. Here their relationship suddently looks far more suspicious.

Those OVAs are positioned to take place after some deep stuff happens, which changes the dynamics a bit. You could see it in how Chise was behaving before and after telling her story.

I really, REALLY liked the OP song of this show, but MAN the actual sequence was pretty underwhelming. I felt this should be one of those shows where the OP sequence should be done by one of those superstar animators in the industry and stylize the hell of it.
