There is a manga called Rescue Wings. Up to volume 3 are published. It's not the same story that we saw in the anime at all. But it's still on the same subject - the rescue wings.

Just started watching this after stumbling across it when I saw a couple of references to on military photos.

Only just finished episode two but it's a very interesting story. Will report more later.

EDIT: Damn this show had me teared up in a few places. Really liked it; almost makes me want to apply for search and rescue.

I'm currently watching it. I can't believe it has been almost 6 years since it came out and that I missed it until now. The funny thing is that series came out before The Guardian came in the theaters, hence I felt the familiarity with the Coast Guard work and the moments of private life harships involving the protagonists when I watch the series.

A very excellent series on all fronts. I can't recall the last time I felt such drama anime having such a grip on my own emotions as a viewer. Bryan Adams' song Never Let Go (incidentally the end credits song for The Guardian) could be a good match for this series when I think of it.

This is old now, but the series will have a Blu-Ray version released late this year to celebrate 60 years of the JASDF.
