Never watched the orginal (I have played through Umineko though), so I guess I'll be provding a newcomer perpsetive. It's clear that something is going on in the village and that the charaters arenot perceving it or are ignoring it (one of the girls had a gun in a scene and no one called attention to it). Don't know if the orginal was this blatant about it;s horror tone, but I'm in for the ride.

It's good to be back. I watched the original a few years back and couldn't put it down, so my interest here is to see how the remake handles things.

Hey, better than ufotable, at least.

A coincidence topic-wise, but the original Higurashi is also Deen.

Isn't Deens magic touch having physically impossible neck poses?

episode 1:

nice to see everyone again. When Mion said "how many years it has been?" .. I somehow feel she is referencing fans of the Higurashi 2006 anime. Well, it's been 14 years Mii-chan, nice to see you again!

When I heard the song at the end.. feels so nostalgic.

Also nice to hear Yukarin as Rika-chan's voice.

Besides Rika observing Rena and Keiichi, what were the additional hints? It's been way too long for me to remember the differences with the original.

Im glad im not the only one who felt that. There a lot of hints that would not necessarily resonate with new viewers but for those of us who are familiar with the plot those hints stick out

Episode 2 reveals this anime is not what it seems and is not a simple remake. It even has a different name, Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Gou (ひぐらしのなく頃に業).

They've released an updated PV to reflect this revelation but I suggest not watching it until you've seen episode 2.

New key visual, new name and 24 episodes confirmed

Anime is not adapting Onikakushi again, this arc is Onidamashi.

Well, I didn't see that coming.

Guess we really are going right into a sequel here. Though in that case there's a lot of uncertainty about what is going on and what certain characters are thinking.

No idea if this still functions well enough for people starting fresh.

I'm pretty sure that building at 1:17 looks EXTREMELY familiar.

Oh wow......Now that's surprising.

Let see where will this new twisted version of Higurashi lead us to.

EDIT: Oh man....those"things" in OP. Can we talk about Umineko in this thread??

Well that's disappointing. This makes me think about OSP's discussion of sequels, especially one particular downfall: that often they end up crushing the happy ending. The original was a long and intense Groundhog Day struggling to figure out the truth and break free from seemingly certain doom, ultimately ending with a very satisfying happy end that everyone fought hard together to obtain, and now that future they claimed through so much effort, all that blood, sweat and tears, was for nothing!?

Now this makes one think:

One thing I thought of. Umineko introduced witches, and one particular character here is one. Could it be that another, antagonistic individual is also a witch, and she found a way to force things back again? In which case I'm still unhappy that they turned the happy end over, especially since, again as Overly Sarcastic Productions noted, this raises doubts about whether we can trust that any new victory can actually lead to happiness since things can be so suddenly turned over, but it would honestly be kind of interesting to see this story when not only the protagonists but also the antagonists possess the ability to recall the other loops and use that to try and outmaneuver each other.

So rather than a remake it's actually a sequel of sorts. Reminds me of the trick they pulled with the FF7 remake. I don't really know if this is something I should continue watching without knowledge of the original and may need to stop here to eventually watch it.
