Anime fans really can be incredibly shallow...

This would have been a good one for Netflix to back, though of course the one-and-dump release schedule would have been the tradeoff.

If they had more than 12 episodes then yes, there would have been more time to show all the good nature scenery as little breathers during the story, but as things stand probably most/all the good nature scenery are going to be cut. So even willing, there wasn't much choice over where to put their priorities.


This second episode packed lots of content, they already introduced all the major characters of the story, though only as a first quick introduction. Shiraishi, Hijikata and Tsurumi still need more characterizing, the latter two only got mentioned.

Animes fans are so picky, most of the DC and Marvel movies are full of horrible CG, but people still have fun, Black Panther is an exemple. but to anime the concept of good does not exist, either it has to be perfect or it's horrible. God!

I watched the first 2 episodes. Except for the part with the bear in episode 1, I'm more than satisfied with what I have seen so far. As other people pointed out, it's a rarity to see the Ainu people depicted properly in Japanese shows, especially in anime. So it is a very welcome change to see something very different, and I can only imagine the boost the anime/manga will give to both tourism in Hokkaido and visibility of Ainu culture to a wider audience.

As for the storyline itself, I surely appreciate the vibes from Sergio Leone's The Good, the Bad and the Ugly when people wiith different motives are after a hidden and stolen treasure. I started reading the manga after the first contact with episode 1, and it is great.

My only regret with the anime and the manga (so far) is that we don't see more of the background between Sugimoto and his late friend during the war. The Battle of Hill 203 outside Port-Arthur was a pivotal moment of the Russo-Japanese War for both history as a whole and for those who lived it. I would have liked to see how the war actually shaped Sugimoto into who he is today as a character.

^I get the anime not having a background on Sugimoto and his late friend after all we’re only two episodes into it—although I’m betting the blind woman is at the center of their story—I don’t know about the manga.

In a perfect world stuff like Golden Kamuy, Shoukoku and Arslan would get plenty of time to adapt their story and adequate budgets because the manga are revered and quite popular. But in the production committee world, things don't work that way.

This turned out to have a lot more comedy than I expected but it's not bad though. I liked the episode and how quickly things are progressing. The narrator started to get a little annoying though.

Anyway this was a good follow up, although this turn out to be a bit more wacky then I expected. One small issue tho, the second trap that caught Ogata was bit iffy. I'm going guess that was really original for the squirrels and most people don't pass through that particular path otherwise any number of people could have gotten into that before him.

The placing and size of that trap makes it very odd to catch a squirrel, it was too high over the passage below, the size of the loop was also too big for a squirrel. It was indeed set up to catch people
It was likely one of many other traps they had set up beforehand to catch whoever was going to follow them. The more the better.

That was explained in the manga, they had set up many more traps.

You may also be right about the place not being visited often, but it could also have been that they had setup the traps the day before, so there wasn't a lot of time to allow someone to randomly fall into them.

Though maybe some days had passed until they had caught Shiraishi.

So cooking is a bit of theme in this story? I was hoping that scene was more of a one time thing because I've never appreciated the constant food porn I keep finding in anime and I honestly find such scenes mind numbingly boring (excuse the pun).

Mmm, I suppose the plan wasn't just asking around town for tattooed man then, but making themselves bait by doing that at the same time. As soon as they noticed they have sagged somebody trailing them, Sachi and Asripa would lure to the trap fulled path they setup beforehand.

I haven't read the manga, but seen people who have constantly make jokes about it being one. I have also read impressions that stated this episode more representative of what series is like in general than the first one. Going by that I think how you enjoyed the 2nd episode despite the food scenes would determine if you can tolerate here on out.

Episode 3:

This episode really made me more interested in kamuy and the society that Aspira came from. Beyond her suvivor skills, I think it was really interesting to know more about her family.

The episode had some amusing comedy face moments (similar to the manga) and also action scenes. I'm not even bothered by the CG anymore (although that bear still can be distracting). Character chemistry really works well for this show imo, especially between Asirpa and Sugimoto.

Really hope the show can keep this up.

This series teach me a lot about Ainu and make their world so interesting, and ASipra Grandmom asking Sugimoto take care for her..and she blushed. And don't worry Aspira faces make this chapter.

The Seventh Division is a fanatical one and we've a soldier now obssesed with the wolf and nw Sujikata(the same one from gintama?) reuniting criminals for his own band...that paper was a good idea, Sugimoto should used it too.
