same here, i hate complimenting a good food that comes with the sauce. IF the sauce is what make the food good, why dont u eat the sauce alone instead lol.

I wasn't expecting an in series explanation for why the Nakiri family strips. Wonder what will happen when Alice and Erina's genes properly awaken.

Actually, if Soma's fried bear was meant to eat with sauce, why don't he just pour those sauce around his fried bear in the first place? This could have save us 1 or 2 chapters.

Soma should really ditch his bad habit of presenting his food that isn't at final form.

I have to disagree completely, even the finest cut of meat uses at minimum salt and pepper to bring out some tatste. Meat in its rawest form literally just cooked doesn't really have any kind of special taste per se.

Also to me a great sauce can easily disguise poor quality meat, I mean I love Asian food, especially chinese thai and mongolian and the cuts of meat used arent every anything special its the sauce that makes the dish. On the flip side the best cut of meat like I said won't taste like anything special on its own, and def won't help a mediocre sauce.

Every well prepared meat either comes with a sauce, seasoning, rub, breading, etc.

It is what makes the meat complete as an entree. If Hayama's meat is better than Soma's that is one thing, but if Soma's complete sauce and meat dish is better than Hayama's that is what you have to give the edge to. The judging here isn't on the individual meat, but with the complete dish.

Truth to be told, did you ever eat a meat that's only roasted without any spice or ingredient added before ??? the only place i ever remember for that kind is at Yakiniku restaurant.

All meat dish nowaday are imbued, soaked, kneaded,..... with other ingredient one way or another more or less to have actual good taste, even more so dish served in restaurant. The sauce is simply a part of that, for example, you could served souma fried bear and have the sauce already pour on top, that's what restaurant commonly do, The dish itself is both the meat and the sauce, there is no need to separate them if you are judging the dish as a whole

Soma actually did field work with hunters that have experience, something you can't replicate.
He probably thinks being Edgelord is enough to win this match

It's not that surprising when you realize that they are only one year younger than the main cast, and look at the bodies some of the girls in the main cast have.

This. Agreed completely.

Souma and Hayama served them separately here, but at an actual restaurant and in normal cases, they'd be served together.

Also, it's not like you can eat just sauce by itself. That's not how sauces are meant to be consumed. I mean, would you ever eat ketchup without any food to go with it? I wouldn't, at least.

The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

I cook it like that myself. It's awful. It's why I predominately eat fast food.

Again, they're only like a year younger than the main cast. They aren't really lolis, they just wear clothes that give that impression.

Some people do. It's really weird. Almost as weird as the people who replace tomato sauce on pizza with ranch dressing. Don't get me wrong, I like dipping pizza into ranch dressing, but completely replacing the tomato sauce? That's just weird.

Even with a really good steak I still would use salt if I'm feeling like enjoying just the beefiness. Seasoning makes the dish.

They both served dipping sauces. And why not? If you dip your fried food just before eating it, the sauce doesn't have time to ruin the crunchiness of the crust. It's also exactly where you want it to be, as opposed to just where you'd put your fingers.

I'll play the devil's advocate and share a real life experience I once had: I'd gone to a fast food joint that was famous for its sauce (and it truly was better, compared to most), but when I visited a prominent restaurant, I realized the difference between pure cuisine and just masking something average with outstanding condiments. To this day, I prefer eating at the second place, and I'll often place an order without sauce, for variety. The first place, while still booming in business, just doesn't have the same appeal.
(of course, it is unfair to compare a fast food joint to a restaurant, although the dish above is souvlaki, which is considered fast food; not to mention, it's not a deep-fried dish, as are the two in question)

That is not to say that Souma shouldn't win; after all, his bear dish is already very close to Hayama's. So, in the end, who managed to "bring out the bear" the most in their dish?

That's the thing though, this isn't about trying to mask a mediocre dish with a great sauce. It's Great + Great = Greater. So who's Greater is greater?

It doesn't matter if the meat is mediocre or if the meat is great but rather which sum is greater. If one had terrible meat but the sauce was so awesome that the other dish with great meat and great sauce isn't as good when comparing the combination, then the terrible meat one still wins.

We already learned this with the Don battle way back in the beginning. It's just that, generally speaking, no sauce is great enough to overcome meat that is actually terrible.

But as noted, both bear meats are already great with only a small margin difference.

Yeah, both dishes without their accompanying sauces are great. They're both delicious. Souma's is just overall better if you consider both the sauce and the katsu itself. Or at least, that's the implication I'm getting and I hope it's correct.

@GDB: Yep. Agreed on all accounts.
