Well that confirms it. If Nishikata can find a way to fit a fireworks display into a jack in the box he'll totally be able to win!
Not sure how I feel about the first episode. It was pretty fun and cute to be sure. But starting and ending with dream sequences had a lot of "what the heck is happening" moments. Eventually with both the dream sequences become obvious. But it's hard to say for a while if they are just getting ridiculously over the top with the visuals for the sake of starting the season big or if it's actually a dream sequence. It was a very solid first episode back. Didn't exactly love it but didn't hate it either. Characters are very much themselves and the relationship is steadily going forward. It is good to get into their heads a bit. Although I will say that Takagi might deserve more trust...if she didn't actually slap Nishikata's sunburn twice. Part of the reason she's had such slow progress in building up this relationship is her inability to resist temptation. Nishikata is really easy to read and mess with. But got to draw the line somewhere...

Yeah, made it a little hard to tell what was a dream and what was real. Overall cute though, a fun return of one of the most endearing romances around.
Either way, Nishikata's dream was just plain weird. Like, why did Takagi turn into a cow? A cat I think I could understand, but a cow? |

Nishikata can only win inside Takagi's dreams.

And dreams can be weird like that.

These types of overly-long, boring dream sequences are often anime-original. Not that I know for sure, since I don't read the manga, but probably is
Anyways, after all those fakes that are just bullies, we finally get the real Takagi-san back. ...Just no more boring anime-original dream sequences.

I never thought I'd see a voiceless, Takagi-san segment, but it worked surprisingly well! The music, visuals, and the facial expressions of Takagi and Nishikata really sold it! It really felt like a segment, just without actually hearing what any of them are saying. Also, Nishikata's Takagi-senses going up and down was priceless .
Nothing shows off how Takagi is a schoolgirl in love at heart more than her expression when she first sees Nishikata and then tries to hide from him, and then basically just following her crush and watching what he does in the morning. Then she runs all the way ahead of him so she could greet him like normal. It was so adorable . We even got a voiceless Yukari/Mina segment where Yukari's trying to surprise Mina for a fun friend teasing moment only to have to constantly hide because Mina finds cute stuff to play with...and then Mina realizes Yukari was totally there the whole time. But the real master of stealth watching her friends is Sanae . Look at Takagi daring Nishikata to go through her gym clothes for a fake desk check that wasn't even necessary...all so she could return his manga to him. Also them pretending to be sensei's was pretty fun, and kind of reminded me of Rie Takahshi in Tawawa . Takagi and Nishikata get library duty, and Takagi is an avid reader, but Nishikata is still a kid that loves to read about dinosaurs, and of course our teasing master is aware of that . I think that's the 3rd time Takagi has directly confessed but tried to play it off, only this time she had to completely make up a line in a book she was reading. At this point I wonder if Nishikata would ever believe her directly confessing, although she's probably just waiting for him . Just a reminder that Nishikata is extremely fit and surprisingly athletic, and a dare from Takagi is enough for him to push himself to run to the beach to prove to her that he can...but the real treat is that Takagi followed him on her bike to give him water and enjoy the sunset with him .

That 10 minutes voiceless cartoon segment didn't do it for me. Mainly because it meant going that long without hearing Rie Takahashi's voice.
After they were done with the whole desk inspection thing and Takagi gave the manga back to Nishikata, I thought there was going to be a surprise inspection and he would get busted and go "Takagi-san MEEEEEEEE!! She set me up!" The fact there ended up being no twist was better. Quote:

I'm not gonna say the Tom and Jerry thing was necessarily bad itself, but you realize that you already wasted an entire episode last time on a dream sequence. You shouldn't put these two back-to-back.
We just want to watch Takagi-san picking on the kid! STOP!

I do wonder about this season so far. It's a bit awkward to start with one episode that was almost entirely a dream sequence and then starting this one with the silent treatment. Come on guys. We want some legitimate Takagi and Nishikata interactions and maybe seeing this awkward romance build up from where season 2 left off. Let's get the show started for real!
Also a bit awkward having this episode after the first episode of Kenja no Deshi where I thought the long silent chunk of that show was also rather distracting. Over 8 minutes without dialogue and almost 9 before Takagi herself said anything was a bit too much. Maybe they just wanted to get really creative this season.

I wonder how many times Takagi's said "I love you" to Nishikata so far. I know it's at least three times. She really doesn't care if it stays a secret.
I really hope this manga just keeps going. I don't care that it's a foregone conclusion with another series about their future, I want to see these two as high school students and witness Nishikata finally ask Takagi to be his girlfriend. Not to mention their first kiss. I want all those scenes. But I don't want the teasing to stop. Just slip it in from time to time as time goes by and they slowly grow up. |

I can't believe the reaction to the silent chapter (which is right out of the manga except the Mina part at the end, BTW) was so negative. Silent comedy has a long and glorious history in animation and beyond. And anime rarely tries it - the Mitsudomoe oilcan sequence being the best I can remember. I say bravo to the anime - which is doing everything right AFAIC - for adapting that chapter as-is.
