So, I noticed that in this season alone, there are some notable titles which have their own (made-up) languages. Let’s list them a bit (note that I don’t know what these languages officially called. So this is just how I call them :P):

Hataraku Maou-sama: Ente-Islan

Ginga Kikotai Majestic Prince: Wulgurian

Suisei no Gargantia: Gargantian and umm... Galactic Alliance (GA) language (?)

Out of those languages, there is one which sounds truly organic and fluently delivered (Wulgarian). There is another which has a lot of consonant sounds that makes it kinda awkward to hear (Ente-Islan). Doesn’t help that most of the VAs also delivered it in such awkward tones and pronunciations that makes it sounds even more cheesy (but still entertaining somehow

). And there’s also one that shared the same consonant sounds as Ente-Islan but the VA delivered it with confidence and fluency that makes it feels like its his native language (GA Language), while the Gargantian sounds a bit more organic than GA language and also delivered with the same confidence and fluency that makes it nice to hear.

I personally think all those made-up languages are great to have (awkwardness and all) because they really give us a glimpse of an actual culture which is different from the main setting. They also give us (jaded fans) some variety from the usual Japanese dialogues even if it’s just for a short time. I don’t know about you guys, but I think they should make these kinds of made-up languages more often as long as the setting and plot need it.

So, how about you all? What do you think of the appearance of quite a number of exotic (made-up) languages in some (new and old) anime series?

Btw, I know I’ve stated this somewhere before, but Ente-Islan really reminds me of the Zentraedi language from Macross universe due to its awkward delivery

That makes me wondering . . . could they possibly recruit some language experts to construct such language? Take Zentradin language in Macross for example. It is very well-structured and even got its own characters (like our alphabets), which i deem too good to be a simply randomness

Obelisk, you forgot Madoka Runes. Hunter x Hunter and Digimon Adventure also had fictional alphabets too.

For me? Translating real languages are just as thrilling. Horizon had like Koine Greek, Latin, German and Spanish along with Japanese.

Aren't the Madoka runes were just stand-in for English alphabet, and thus, not really a different language?

Marc, those above are just a few examples. So cut me some slack, will you?

There’s no way I’d list even half of all the series I know that have fictional letters.

Macross and Space Battleship Yamato 2199 did this with the alien invaders.

The Zentradi and Gamilas have there own spoken languages (as well as written languages).

In non-anime:
Star Trek of course had the pretty much fully developled language of the Klingons.

Star Wars has the galactic written language of "Aurebesh"

What do you think of Zentrans (aka the VAs) delivery of their own language? I personally think it was awkward and sometimes a really obvious line-reading at its worst

I don't pay attention to fictitious languages unless we're talking about Yuki Kajiura's music. Some weird combination of Latin, English, Japanese, and whatever else might fit depending on the show. Has anyone ever successfully translated one of her songs? All I get is a bunch of gibberish...

Hidden elements of references in anime are great. While fictional language that you can try to incorporate is amusing.

Yes, I really love when creators make up their own language for their anime/manga. It's so creative and gives a feeling of realism.

.......I did it once at school one day...because I was really bored. XD But also because I have characters who use magic spells a lot. And rather than dabble in books with existing magic spells, I thought it would be "safer" to just make them up.

Mirai by Kalafina uses the same melody as Credens Justitam, so that might be the closest thing to a translation of a Kajiuralish song.

A segment of Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei had all the characters speaking in gibberish.

I did wonder if it was based on how English sounds to the Japanese.

I can't tell the difference in Hataraku Maou Sama and Suisei No Gargantia, they pretty horrible...

For the record, for Maou-sama, it's courtesy of the anime maker. Novel's Ente Isladish is in Japanese. Nothing beats LOTR's elvish.
