Recommendations for SciFi novels/Space Operas for people new to japanese culture

So my friend was thinking about trying out reading some translated japanese novels. He only a tiny bit of an anime fan or mech fan (very tiny bit). His favorite genre is into space operas and science fiction.

Any recommendations for my friend on novels he could try reading?

I don't understand why you'd want to go to translated Japanese stuff for this... The only one I've read is All You Need Is Kill (not space opera) and I preferred the Tom Cruise film adaption.

There's Yukikaze, military SF, two volumes translated in English last I heard. Read the first volume and it was pretty good. There's a lack of sci fi authors with scientific background in Japan though afaik, and Murakami is the only serious novelist I know by name so (his Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World is pretty weird sci fi btw although nowhere near space opera). It's not like there's a lack of quality SF novels in English unless your friend exhausted all of them.
