Space Battleship Yamato is one of a handful of anime that has risen beyond its subcultural origins to become part of the national collective consciousness.

I know, I was being half sarcastic.

But anime actually gets into a lot of things; I see a lot of Japanese documentaries using anime BGMs.

Yamato is somewhat different, as it aired before that perception of anime came about.

There's also the fact that a show like Yamato should have some very obvious appeal to the Japanese Navy.

That sort of display makes me want the show's theme song to become canon in show as a real song. Just to add another layer onto the mythos.

We playtested a Star Blazers Fleet Battle System game for the Celesticon convension in September. It is a recreation of the Battle of Gamilas from the TV movie "Yamato: The New Voyage" mixed with the later battle of the same movie. There were 125 ships involved on the table.

The recreation however used the updated Gamilas fleet from Yamato 2199 and supplimented equipment to the Earth ships involved. The Dark Nebula ships were upgraded as well to upgun them by request from a now deceased player I had ten years ago. The additional bulk and in some cases weapons boosted the Gamilas force to fairly capable. It surprised me actually.

Dessler's fleet finds half the Nebulan force over Gamilas and charges in at full speed, weapons hot. And annihilated them fairly quickly. (saving Gamilas form its dire fate) Lost a few ships, but redeplyed the fleet and started launching fighter to deal with the Nebulan Flagship and other half of their fleet over Iscandar. There things got bloodier, but still the Gamilas fleet cut though the enemy escort ships using high speed encirclement tactics. At that point Yamato arrived with some new Earth ships, but really the Gamilas did most of the damage. The remaining Dark Nebula force managed to withdraw six escort vessels, while the remaining capital ships were pounded into oblivion by the Earth Defense Forces supporting Dessler in his defense of Planet Iscandar.

I'll make a more detailed Battle Report with pictures later.

How about this one for reality.

The actual pilots and crews are completely worn out since they have to make a scramble take off about once every day to intercept the PRC boogies that come near Japan air space.

According to the Japanese wiki on Yamato 2199, the captain of the Red Fleet Battleship is another familiar face. While I don't remember his name, he would later command a green Battlecarrier in Yamato 2....releasing Starflies at Yamato.

He will be "dismissed" for his failure.

Does it strike anyone as odd that Celestria has what looks like a metal on her neck that is in the shape of an anchor?

It doesn't seem as impressive as the original battle carrier. But that may because of the transparent plastic used making it difficult to identify features and get a sense of scale of the ship. It is nice it comes with the drill missile bomber.

My guess is the two strips under the bomber are the points that roll over or flip out to reveal additional weapons like the older version.

My guess is Dessler's personal battle carrier would be an improved model of this ship (from the TV movie: New Voyages)
